Sony Xperia XZ, X Performance receive new update, here's what's new

A new OTA update is rolling out to the Sony Xperia XZ and X Performance. After installation, the patch should bump the software version of the two models to 41.2.A.7.65, as they both feature the same Snapdragon 820 chipset.
The new firmware brings the September batch of fixes for security vulnerabilities found on the Android platform. We have to commend Sony for pushing out the update in a timely manner, as currently only Nexus, Pixel, and some Nokia devices have it installed.

Poll results are in: the Compact Xperia has the fans' hearts

Last year, Sony made the decision to bump the flagship Compact series down — you know, the 4.6-inched small top-tier phones they used to release together with each yearly flagship refresh now became mid-range devices with the Xperia X Compact. “Is that the end for pocket-friendly flagships?” we asked.

Seems not. Xperia XZ1 Compact is here and shows that Sony is back on track with making top-tier handsets that are easy to use with one hand. With pretty much the same hardware as the regular XZ1 and even the same 2,700 mAh battery, it’s a no-compromise Android …

Deal: Sony Xperia XZ (US variant) now costs $399

If you only have $400 to spend on a high-end unlocked smartphone, perhaps you’ll want to know that Sony’s Xperia XZ now costs $399.99 – brand new – at Amazon and Best Buy. We’re talking about the official US variant of the phone, which obviously comes with warranty (unlike the international model).

$399.99 is the lowest price of the US Xperia XZ we’ve seen thus far, and Amazon is even adding a 64 GB microSD card for free. As a reminder, the handset was initially released for $699.99 in the US (back in October), so it’s not among Sony’s newest devices. Nevertheless, …

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact: are you happy the flagship Compact is back?

So, last year, it seemed like Sony had made the decision to kill off the flagship Compact series — you know, the 4.6-inched small top-tier phones they used to release together with each yearly flagship refresh. In 2015, we got the Xperia Z5 Compact, which had almost the same specs as the regular Z5, but in a smaller body. Then, in 2016, Sony took a turn and released an Xperia X Compact — same concept for size, but midrange hardware inside. “Is that the end for pocket-friendly flagships?” we asked.

Seems not. Xperia XZ1 Compact is here and shows that Sony is back …

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus Hand-On

Sony’s back in the mid-range field and ready to take on some
stiff competition in the higher end of that category. The Xperia XA1 Plus has been
announced alongside their latest flagships. Retailing for $379.99, we take a
first look at whether the device itself is premium for a mid-range, or just the
price.Design and Display

The Xperia XA1 Plus is a hybrid of sorts between the XA and XA
Ultra. In fact, the 1080p screen size is smack-dab in the middle of the two,
sized at 5.5 inches and delivering 403 pixels per inch. Keeping in the trend of
its …

Xperia XZ1 vs XZs vs XZ Premium: Sony flagship comparison

Staying true to its half-year upgrade cycle, Sony has announced its new top smartphone, the Xperia XZ1. If you were hoping for something brand new and revolutionary from Sony, just move on, because it isn’t here. Not this year. This year, we have yet another small refinement to the company’s flagships phone formula, resulting in a very minor upgrade over the XZs, which was released in the first half of the year. Still, the XZ1 is here, so we figured we could take a closer look at the few differences between Sony’s new flagship, the XZs, and, why not! – the XZ Premium big-screen …

Sony says you shouldn't use the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact underwater, despite them being water-resistant

Earlier today, Sony announced two new high-end, dust- and water-resistant phones: Xperia XZ1 (pictured above) and Xperia XZ1 Compact. Even though both handsets are IP68-certified (which normally means they should survive underwater for 30 minutes at depths of up to 1.5 meters), Sony says you “should not put” any of the two phones “completely underwater.”

Here’s exactly what Sony states about the water resistance of the Xperia XZ1 in a footnote on its official website (also valid for the Compact):

“Xperia XZ1 is water resistant and protected against …

First Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XA1 Plus promo videos are here

Today at IFA 2017, Sony unveiled three brand new smartphones: Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact, and Xperia XA1 Plus. Interestingly, the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, both of which offer high-end features, will run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, likely being among the first in the world to do so. But the mid-range XA1 Plus (running Android 7 Nougat) is not to be overlooked, as it packs a generous 3430 mAh battery – the largest we’ve seen on a modern Sony phone thus far.

Trying to lure consumers into buying its new handsets, Sony released promo videos for each of them. As …

Sailfish OS for Sony Xperia X officially launched, but you'll have to pay for it

Sailfish OS did not have too much success in the smartphone industry. After a few failed partnerships with Intex, Fairphone, and TRI, the Finnish company is now trying a different approach.

Apparently, Sony Mobile allowed Jolla, the company behind Sailfish OS to optimize the platform for its Xperia X smartphones. Today, Jolla announced that its new Sailfish X operating system for Sony Xperia X has gone gold and will soon be available for purchase.

Yes, you read that right. Jolla will sell the Sailfish X to everyone who wants to install it on the Sony Xperia …

Official renders of Sony's Xperia XZ1 Compact reveal a plastic outer shell

After we saw the first official renders of Sony’s upcoming flagship Xperia XZ1, it was all but inevitable its downsized twin, the Xperia XZ1 Compact, would be next in line. So here we are today — Roland Quandt has now given us our first actual look at the device (CAD-based renders notwithstanding), presumably once again sourced from a premature Amazon listing.

And as expected from Sony, the design matches the bigger XZ1 pretty closely, but with a couple of important changes. Besides the smaller size and increased thickness, there’s one thing that …
