What 'Star Trek' star LeVar Burton learned as first-time podcaster

TwitterFacebook

LeVar Burton just can’t stop reading.

The former Star Trek and Roots star just wrapped the first season of his weekly podcast, LeVar Burton Reads, where Burton lends his reassuring, emotive voice to various works of short-form fiction. The term “season” is a loose one — the books are a grab bag of authors and genres, from Daisy Johnson’s exploration of solitary life in The Lighthouse Keeper to one of Neil Gaiman’s modern fantasy stories, Chivalry.

Though all 12 episodes are finished, subscribers still have something to look forward to: Burton just finished recording a bonus episode of the podcast at the Now Hear This podcast festival in New York City where he read one of the stories from Five-Carat Soul by James McBride and was joined by the author on stage. Lenovo and Disney teaming up for immersive Star Wars VR experience

At a company event, Disney unveiled a VR system it has been developing with Lenovo to create an immersive Star Wars experience. For example, you can be playing HoloChess with movie characters, or engaging in lightsaber battles using a dedicated controller peripheral – that kind of cool stuff!

The Star Wars Jedi Challenges system comprises a special VR headset, a lightsaber controller, and apps ran on your smartphone. The headset is of the type where your smartphone is mounted in the front, so nothing too revolutionary here. But then again, this would help for a manageable price …

TwitterFacebook

Disney fans have a new favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sorry Robert Downey Jr., guys named Chris and all you ladies — there’s a new king of the Marvel stars, and he’s just getting started.

Tom Holland, aka Peter Parker, aka the Spider-Man, got the loudest screams at the D23 Expo on Saturday, period. No one will convince me otherwise, and if you argue I won’t hear you anyway, because my ears are shattered, blown, ringing incessantly.

The biannual Disney event always brings its biggest stars to the convention center in Anaheim, California, for a quick stage appearance before a look at its upcoming films. Marvel Studios stuck the big finale on Saturday, when it showed an astounding reel of footage from Avengers: Infinity War. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

The outpouring of love and professional respect for True Blood actor Nelsan Ellis, who died on Saturday, has been overwhelming.

But aside from the social media well wishes from his co-stars and fellow film and TV actors, one message stands out, and it’s from none other than Ellis’ True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, aka the vampire Bill Compton

Posted to Moyer’s Facebook page on Sunday morning, the long message isn’t simply a letter to a dear departed friend, it’s the best example yet of just how much Ellis’ colleagues respected his acting skill. Describing an iconic scene from the series set in the town’s diner, Moyer remembers the hold Ellis had on the other cast members and crew.  Read more…

WOW.

Stephen Amell stars in The CW’s hit DC Comics superhero series, Arrow. But did you know he’s also an IRL superhuman who possesses powers above and beyond the normal person?

It is well known that Amell performs many of his own stunts on Arrow, but you never really know how much is physical prowess and how much is the illusion of fictional TV. That’s why the star’s #RedNoseDay appearance on American Ninja Warrior is so damn impressive.

Unannounced Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) and Galaxy J5 (2017) star in hands-on videos

Samsung has yet to announce the Galaxy J7 (2017) and Galaxy J5 (2017), but we’ve already seen renders showing both handsets. What’s more, Samsung inadvertently confirmed the phones’ existence, so we assume it won’t be long before they’ll hit the market. Until that happens, we can now take a look at the two upcoming phones in a couple of short video reviews made somewhere in Russia. The videos are not subtitled, but at least they provide the best look at the new Galaxy J series thus far.

Both the Galaxy J7 (2017) and Galaxy J5 (2017) are made out of metal, and share the same design, although …

Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 Plus reportedly in full scale development under code names Star and Star 2

Korean media The Bell reports that the Galaxy S8 successor is in full scale development at Samsung under the code name Star. A larger-screen model, possibly the Galaxy S9 Plus, is codenamed Star 2. That aside, there are two bits of new information regarding the Galaxy S9 in the report. First, the phone is said to have similar display technology to its predecessor. Thus, it likely won’t be the foldable phone that’s been rumored for so long, but rather a refinement of the Infinity Display design.

Second, Samsung has reportedly accelerated its component production …
