Camera update reveals names of some unannounced Nokia smartphones

HMD Global has quite a few Android smartphones in the pipeline, so Nokia fans should be thrilled about the perspective of having a much larger portfolio at their disposal. We’ve already reported about two possible Nokia-branded smartphones coming next year, Nokia 1 and Nokia 6 (2018).

However, the Finnish company plans to launch a lot more devices in 2018, not just those two that we already know about. Luckily, someone found his way into the latest version of Nokia Camera app and learned more about HMD’s upcoming products.

Apparently, the latest version of …

HTC to launch fewer smartphones in 2018, including a mid-range version of U11+

HTC is having a hard time, especially after selling most of its mobile staff to Google. Even so, the Taiwanese company plans a comeback in the smartphone business, but that might not happen in 2018.

According to industry sources, HTC will launch a limited number of smartphones in 2018. The company’s R&D and marketing efforts will focus on a single flagship and a few mid-range Android smartphones, which will be released next year.

To improve its presence in the mid-range segment, HTC plans to release a water-down version of the HTC U11+ in January 2018, …

Xiaomi in talks with carriers to launch flagship smartphones in the US

Apparently, Apple lost significant market share in China to local smartphone markers, and things aren’t going to improve in the near future, quite the contrary. Huawei is reportedly negotiating with US carriers the launch of its newest flagship, the Mate 10 Pro.

Huawei’s high-end smartphone is likely to arrive in the United States at AT&T and Verizon, but only if talks end successfully for all part involved. The Mate 10 Pro is meant to compete with Samsung and Apple at the top-tier, which means fewer sales for these companies.

Now, rumor has it that Xiaomi …

Qualcomm wants to redefine Hi-Fi for smartphones with its new USB Type-C DAC

Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset is official now, but it was not the only noteworthy news that came straight from the company’s Hawaiian Tech summit this week.
It would seem that Qualcomm is taking Hi-Fi audio pretty seriously in line with the recent early retirement of the 3.5mm audio jack from most phones as it announced that it will be making a brand new Hi-Fi DAC available for device manufacturers to bake into their devices.
The Aqstic AQT1000 Hi-Fi digital to analog converter is a USB Type-C plug’n’play …

2017 top-tier smartphones that still have a fingerprint scanner on the front

Fingerprint scanners were made popular by the iPhone 5s way back in 2013. Housed in the home button at the front, Touch ID made phone unlocking super simple — press home button to wake the phone, wait for it to scan your finger to unlock. Naturally, it quickly became a trend and is now a standard feature that’s making its way to mid-range and even some lower level phones.

But not every phone has their fingerprint scanner on the front. Some had them installed on their backs, next to the camera, some have them on the side frame. In fact, with the war on the bezel …

HMD confirms the camera app on Nokia smartphones will be updated

You might remember that HMD got its hands on the Lumia Camera UI design patent some months ago. At that time we hoped the Finnish company will bring it to some or all Nokia smartphones, and it looks like we weren’t wrong.

HMD’s Global Chief Product Manager Juho Sarvikas confirmed that his company plans to update the Camera app on all its Nokia smartphones in the near future. He also hinted that the update will include many of the features (if not all) that made the Lumia Camera UI so reliable.

Well, considering the current Camera app on HMD’s Nokia smartphones …

Samsung has just turned 40 Galaxy S5 smartphones into a large Bitcoin mining machine

It’s no surprise that most smartphones launched these days are more powerful than many computers released several years ago. So, why wouldn’t a handful of smartphones be as powerful as one of the modern PCs worth more than $2,000?

Well, it appears that you only need eight old Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones to be able to mine Bitcoin the way a desktop computer does. In fact, the smartphones are more power-efficient at Bitcoin mining than a similarly powerful PC, Samsung claims.

As part of its “Upcycling” initiative, Samsung has decided to show other smartphone companies that even two-year-old …
