Apple HomePod manufacturer sees facial recognition eventually coming to smart speakers

The company that assembles Apple’s HomePod smart speaker, Inventec Appliances, said last week that it expects features offered by 3D-sensing cameras to eventually be available on smart speakers. That would include facial and image recognition that could make the product “more convenient and…easier to use,” according to Inventec Appliances president David Ho. The executive did say that he isn’t sure that a smart speaker with AI would be in demand by consumers.

While Ho didn’t mention Apple’s HomePod by name, he did say that Inventec Appliances is also producing a voice enabled smart speaker …

Cook: Current technology for AR based smart glasses "not mature"

Ever since the launch last year of Pokemon Go, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been a strong supporter of Augmented Reality. Because of that support, there have been several reports claiming that Apple’s next innovative product will be smart glasses similar to Google Glass. While the latter product failed in the consumer market, some analysts see such a product succeeding in Apple’s hands. Former Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that Apple Glasses will end up bigger than the iPhone.

But Cook put the kibosh on rumors that the glasses will come soon. The executive said in an interview on Tuesday …

Google to produce smart speaker with screen to take on the Amazon Echo Show

After the surprising success of the Amazon Echo created strong demand for the new product category known as the smart speaker, Google launched its Echo challenger last November. With Google Assistant in the role of the virtual personal sidekick, which is held by Alexa on the Echo devices, the Google Home came to market on November 4th, 2016. The latest data show that Amazon controls more than 70% of the smart speaker market with Google accounting for roughly 25%.

Just the other day, Google pulled YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show. This is the version of the Echo that features a 7-inch screen. …

How to activate Smart Invert in iOS 11

TwitterFacebook

The new “Smart Invert” feature in iOS 11 is a dark mode, but smarter.

For a while, Apple has been trying features to ease the nighttime burden on our eyes when they’re staring at screens, with greyscale mode in iOS 8 and Night Shift in iOS 9. Smart Invert, iOS 11’s go at eye relief, inverts some colors, but leaves images, videos, and some apps untouched, aiming to dampen your screen’s glow without leading to the really weird image contortions that we saw with previous iterations of the feature.

'Star Trek Discovery' premiere review: Smart, serious sci-fi on a slow burn

TwitterFacebook

Star Trek history was made Sunday night, and not just because of Sonequa Martin-Green — who, as Michael Burnham, became the pioneering black female protagonist this franchise deserves. (Seriously, the camera can’t get enough of her, delivering epic hero shot after epic hero shot.)

It’s more than that. For the first time in the history of Star Trek, we’re not getting an introduction to the main location of a show in its first episode. The equivalent of the Enterprise, or the Voyager, or the space station known as DS9, doesn’t show up yet. Your cozy familiar template for a spacebound show that introduces all its characters at once is deader than Kirk’s hairpiece.  Read more…

Apple HomePod surfaces in California and China during employee testing of the smart speaker?

Apple’s version of the smart speaker, the Apple HomePod, is expected to be launched in December. Apple is hoping that the launch doesn’t come too late to capture some holiday sales. The device, made up of a speaker and the virtual personal assistant Siri, will take on the product that created the category, the Alexa-powered Amazon Echo. Other smart speakers that will compete with the HomePod include the Google Home, the upcoming Cortana powered Microsoft Invoke, the just announced Sony smart speaker (powered by Google Assistant) and a unit being prepped by Samsung that will include AI assistant …
