Photos show off Portrait Lighting camera effects on iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus

Chances are that you’re already familiar with Apple’s Portrait Mode – a feature that adds artistic blur (bokeh) to the background of your images. It was introduced with the iPhone 7 Plus, leveraging its dual camera system to produce the effect. At today’s keynote, Apple announced a new addition to its Portrait mode called Portrait Lighting. As its name suggests, it allows the lighting of the image to be manipulated for more dramatic effect.
Sounds cool and all, but what do photos with Portrait Lighting applied look like? Well, in the gallery below are a few samples …

Final retail packaging for 10th anniversary iPhone cases show the iPhone 8 moniker?

Last week, we saw a couple of reports concerning the name that Apple will give its tenth anniversary iPhone model. Up to now, everyone has called this device the Apple iPhone 8. Last Friday, we passed along a report stating that this version of the iPhone will actually be called the Apple iPhone Edition. The same rumor mentioned that the sequels to the Apple iPhone 7 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus will be named the Apple iPhone 8 and Apple iPhone 8 Plus, respectively.

If that wasn’t enough to make your head spin, the very next day another rumor made its way around the water cooler. This time, the …

More than 100 Motorola employees drop their Moto Z2 Force at the same time to show off ShatterShield

Motorola shook up the mobile world in 2015 when it introduced a shatter-proof screen for the Motorola DROID Turbo 2. The ShatterShield technology was refined and subsequently deployed on Motorola’s next two flagship models, the Moto Z Force and the Moto Z2 Force. With its multi-layered approach, and the use of P-OLED instead of glass, the ShatterShield display is designed to survive a fall of five-feet or less without cracking or breaking.

With the ShatterShield display, the biggest fear that phone owners have is gone. Because the screen is plastic though, it is more sensitive to …

Fitbit smartwatch renders show why the device might be a "must-own" for certain people

Back on August 10th, we showed you leaked renders of the new Fitbit smartwatch. Fitbit needs to hit a grand slam with this product, especially after its share of the global wearables market has declined 45% year-over-year. A new report published today reveals that Fitbit just might have something up its sleeve that will make its smartwatch a “must-own” product for those who are ill and need to track certain readings produced by their body.

The leaked image shows that Fitbit will be using two red LED sensors on the back of its timepiece. That compares with the use of two green sensors on …

Steven Soderbergh's new HBO show will have a choose-your-own-adventure feel

TwitterFacebook

Though it’s still in preproduction, Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming series Mosaic is already unlike anything HBO has ever done.

In an extensive, new interview with Lincoln Center’s Film Comment, Soderbergh shared more about the project and how it will tie in to an app due out in November — an app that lets users familiarize themselves with the story of Mosaic and choose how it unfolds.

“Branching narratives have been around forever, but technology now allows, I hope, for a more elegant, intuitive form of engagement than used to be possible,” Soderbergh said in the interview.  Read more…

White supremacist rally ends early in Boston as counter-protesters show up in huge numbers

TwitterFacebook

A few dozen attendees showed up for Saturday’s planned “free speech” rally in Boston. But counter-protesters showed up in the thousands.

Per local news reports, over 10,000 people gathered at Boston Commons to protest the right-wing gathering, which quickly fell apart after it became clear the planned speaking schedule would not come to fruition.

In fact, police were seen taking down rally flags and decor before 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. (The rally was scheduled for 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.) Whoops!

At around the same time, Twitter was flooded with images from the counter-protest. In one clip, crowds can be heard chanting “Not in Boston” — a reference to last week’s violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Read more…

Moto X4 leaked pictures show the phone from all angles

There’s one more Moto smartphone coming later this month, although its availability might be limited at launch. The Moto X4 is expected to be officially introduced on August 24 in Brazil, just one day after Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note 8.

Previous rumors revealed the Moto X4 will be a mid- to high-end Android smartphone with a dual-camera setup. Today, the smartphone passed the Brazilian equivalent of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which means the Moto X4 will likely be announced very soon.

Along with some of the phone’s specs, Lenovo also published a handful of …

Photos claim to show final design of the Moto X4 dual-camera setup

The unthinkable happened a couple of days ago when reliable source Evan Blass (@evleaks) admitted that the render he revealed last month as the camera design for the Moto X4, was not the final design. But Blass did the right thing and posted an image that supposedly does show the final version of the rear-facing dual camera setup. The final version of the camera has the dual LED flash units on the top of the module; the original image had the flash units on the bottom.

Similar to the way the dual camera set-up has been deployed on the Motorola Moto Z2 Force, one of the two sensors will take …
