Samsung Galaxy Note 8 guide: How to enable the display's native WQHD+ resolution output

While the official launch of the Note 8 is about a week or so away, but this doesn’t mean that we can’t show you a few tricks that will help you make the most out of your Note 8 once you get into possession of one.
Today, we will address one of the features that you might want to micro-manage on your own – the default resolution of your device. In case you’ve played around with a Galaxy S8 or S8+ before, you might know that although it comes with a WQHD+ 1440 x 2960-pixel display, by default the phone runs at FHD+ resolution, or 1080 x 2220 pixels. For …

FYI: The screen of Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 has a default resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels

Officially announced by Samsung earlier this week, the Galaxy Note 8 sports a dual-curve 6.3-inch screen – the largest ever on a Note smartphone. While this is definitely a Quad HD+ (1440 x 2960 pixels) display, you won’t be seeing that resolution out of the box.

Just as it does on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung is defaulting the screen resolution of the Note 8 to Full HD+, and it’s mentioning this on the phone’s official website. Due to the 18.5:9 aspect ratio of the display, the resolution is 1080 x 2220 pixels (instead of the standard 1080 x 1920 Full …

Results: what resolution do you have your Galaxy flagship set to?

Despite the feature being 3 years old already, whether QHD is useful on a smartphone screen or not is still a highly debatable topic. At this point, those against it have begrudgingly agreed to not bring it up, as there’s little sense to argue it — QHD is now mainstream. And those that are for it couldn’t be happier for the aforementioned reason — most flagships have it.

Samsung, however, decided to appease all tastes and just gave users three choices of resolution — HD (720 x 1080), FHD (1080 x 1920), and QHD (1440 x 2560) — on its latest flagships. Finally, whoever feels like a low resolution …

Sony Xperia XZ Premium tutorial: Here's how to enable constant 4K display resolution

Pssst. Pssst! Got a Sony Xperia XZ Premium?
If so, then you’re probably awed by its super-crisp 4K display… that’s actually downscaling content to Full HD 1080p by default.
Yes, as per Sony, “4K (and 4K HDR with 4K HDR content) is used in the Album and Video apps and third party apps with 4K (and 4K HDR) content. Everything else, so homescreen, apps, menus, etc are shown in Full HD.”

A bummer, isn’t it? Having a 4K display on paper but not using it to its full potential… Well, lucky for all of you tinkerers out …

Imagination Technologies will resolve its licensing issues with Apple using a dispute resolution procedure

The negotiations for a new licensing deal between Imagination Technologies and its biggest customer Apple have obviously reached a dead end. As a result of this failed attempt to resolve the latest controversy with Apple, related to intellectual property, Imagination starts a dispute resolution procedure, Reuters reports.

Imagination Technologies didn’t actually say what the dispute was about, but, considering the latest news from the companies, we can assume that it concerns the future use of their GPU designs by Apple, the intellectual property related to them and the financial details …

Galaxy S8's funky screen resolution revealed, but phone may default to 1080p

A photo of what is presumably a Galaxy S8 display setting has leaked out, and it shows a display resolution change slider that goes from HD+ to WQHD+ resolution, with Full HD+ in the middle. That middle setting, however, is shown to be the default one, and we can’t help but think that Samsung may pull of with the S8 what it did with the S7 after the Nougat update.

With the official release of Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Samsung fans were treated to a nice dessert in the form of over 20 new features and overhauled visuals. However, some users have also …

Would you sacrifice Quad HD display resolution on flagships for better battery life?

It’s a sad fact of life, but flagship phones have much worse battery endurance than their midrange counterparts with a similar battery size, and the bright Quad HD resolution displays they sport seem to be the culprit. The marriage of a decent battery capacity, and a 1080p display seem to be the winning tradeoff in battery endurance and pixel density these days (well, save for the OnePlus 3T), since the Quad HD flagships are all clustered in the 6-9 hours range of screen-on time in our proprietary script. That goes for the new LG G6, for last year’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and for …
