Action Launcher update brings Essential Phone support, adds adaptive folders

Action Launcher, the popular Android app that allows users to customize their smartphones, is getting yet another important update. This would be version 31 and, as developer Chris Lacy points out, the launcher receives a handful of new features and improvements.

First off, Essential Phone users will be pleased to know Action Launcher now has support for this particular device. Another important addition is adaptive folders support. On top of that, the developer announced adaptive icon support, which previously required the one-time Plus upgrade, is now available for free to everyone.

What's your preferred phone screen aspect ratio?

In the year when flagship phone displays from most major brands grew taller and narrower, shifting from 16:9 aspect ratios to 18.5:9 (Galaxy S8), 19.5:9 (iPhone X), or straight up 2:1 Univisium standard (LG V30), we wanted to ask you if that’s ok with you, and whether you miss the older standard. The thing is, the 2:1 ratio or the ones gravitating around it, is shifting downmarket to midrangers, and next year we might see most phones moving to the tall and narrow paradigm.

There are downsides and advantages to both formats, but, needless to say, the old one of, …

Does your phone support T-Mobile's Extended Range and VoLTE? This app will tell you if it does

Back in August, T-Mobile celebrated winning 45% of the 600MHz low frequency airwaves that the FCC put up for auction. The carrier spent nearly $8 billion to win all that spectrum. Combined with T-Mobile’s previous ownership of 700MHz spectrum, the carrier markets both low frequency bands as its Extended Range LTE service. T-Mobile, the leader in the industry when it comes to marketing, reveals that its Extended Range airwaves travel twice as far and penetrate buildings four times better than other frequencies.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer, your handset must be compatible with these bands …

Clearer images of an alleged OnePlus 5T tip a taller, narrower phone

Another day, another alleged OnePlus 5T render springs from the guts of the Chinese tech blogosphere or thereabouts. It doesn’t reveal much else than what we already know – the 5T will likely be a taller, narrower handset due to the new 18:9 aspect ratio of the 6″ display – but it is clearer than previous alleged renders, and will keep your wheels spinning until OnePlus gets on stage next week to actually announce it.

As for the back of the handset, it certainly looks like in previous leaked renders, rear-mounted finger scanner, dual camera, …

Earnings warning hints at weak iPhone 8 sales; iPhone 7 is the most popular phone during Q3

Pegatron, one of the contract manufacturers used by Apple to assemble the iPhone, warned today that demand for the Apple iPhone 8 could be weak during the first quarter of 2018. The company said that it often experiences a seasonal slowdown during the start of a new year. Jeff Pu, an analyst at Yuanta Investment Consulting, predicts that Apple will slash orders for the iPhone 8 by 50% during the first quarter. Pegatron produces the iPhone 8 while Foxconn assembles the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. Apple contributes 60% of Pegatron’s revenue and is the company’s top customer.

Someone made an Android phone the size of a credit card and it costs less than $100

Despite the fact that phablets have become the standard in the smartphone industry these days, some people don’t like their smartphones to be very large. Luckily, there are still plenty of average-sized smartphones out there, although when it comes to flagships the offer is kind of limited.

Even though there are a plethora of average-sized handsets available on the market, we can’t say the same thing about small smartphones. And when we say small, we mean credit card-sized small.

A Japanese company unveiled its rather niche product (hence the name) called …

New Essential Phone update enables fingerprint sensor functionality, adds November security patch

The Essential Phone is definitely not a perfect phone, even though it wears the pedigree of Android’s creator, Andy Rubin. The good news is the US-based company is trying to patch it up as fast as possible. Several updates have already been released since the phone’s launch, which addresses some of the major issues that were reported by early adopters.

Motorola disses Apple and other phone makers in new Moto Mod ads

Motorola today released two new video ads that feature
Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus, alongside the Moto Z2 smartphone and some Moto Mods. In these ads –
embedded below – Motorola touts the superiority of its Z2, as “your
phone” (including the iPhone 8) can’t “get loud” and can’t turn
into a projector. Of course, the Moto Z2 can’t do that by itself, either, as it
does it with the help of Moto Mods – including the recently released Moto Mod
Speaker with Amazon Alexa, and the Moto Insta-share Projector.

Furthermore, Motorola doesn’t appear to be impressed with
iPhone 8 Plus’ Portrait …
