Essential says "a new wave" is coming on February 15 – will we see a new phone?

Several months back, Essential confirmed that it was working on a next-generation handset, saying that this should be easier to repair than the original Essential Phone. Now, the company is getting ready to announce something on February 15 – that’s Thursday – and this might have something to do with a new smartphone.
Essential took to Twitter to inform the world that “a new wave [of something] is coming” on February 15. The company also shared an image – seen above – showing what resembles the fingerprint scanner of the first Essential Phone. This could mean …

Privacy matters: Android P might alert you if a phone call is being recorded

Android 9.0 P is likely just around the corner as an early developer beta and possible features of the upcoming build are slowly trickling out. Just yesterday, we informed you about a slew of plausible features that involved display notch support, visual improvements to make the OS more appealing to iOS users, as well as making Android future-proof and capable of correctly working on unorthodox devices like the dual-screen ZTE Axon M and the oft-rumored foldable Galaxy X. Battery improvements are also mentioned.

Today, a somewhat minor but undoubtedly noteworthy feature …

Amazon refunds Prime Exclusive phone owners who paid to remove the ads

Since 2016, Amazon has been offering an ever-increasing lineup of Prime Exclusive phones – unlocked devices sold at significantly lower prices. There has always been a catch, though – they shipped with preinstalled Amazon software and had lockscreen ads. While you couldn’t remove the apps, you had the option to pay a fee (depending on your device) to remove the lockscreen ads. At least that was the case until last week, when Amazon made the decision to remove the lockscreen ads for everyone, but increase the cost of every Prime Exclusive device by $20.
But …

Would (did) you buy a phone as a gift for Valentine's Day?

Ah, the beauty of gift-giving. Nowadays, it’s pretty common to shell out for an expensive present at some occasions, such as the Christmas holidays or a special someone’s birthday. Cynics might pin it as a bad syndrome of capitalism and consumerism programming us to measure our feelings in cold, hard cash.

But let’s admit it — it’s easier to pick something expensive rather than look for the perfect, practical thing to give. When looking for that special item to wrap in a gift box, we often ask ourselves “Would that person be able to just trot down to a random store and buy it themselves?”. …

IDC: Pixel shipments surge, Essential phone lags in 2017

A couple of tweets from IDC”s research director Francisco Jeronimo, revealed that Google doubled the number of Pixel handsets it shipped last year to 3.9 million handsets. That is a strong performance on an annual basis, but the Pixel made up just a small percentage of the global market. In fact, it is less than 1%. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL didn’t launch until the fourth quarter of 2017 which means that much of the strong showing was due to sales of the original generation models.

The Pixel handsets have a way to go to compete with the likes of the iPhone and the Galaxy S line. Of course, …

Essential Phone now comes with free 4K 360-degree camera ($179 value)

The Essential Phone is one of the cheapest flagships you can buy in the United States at the moment. Moreover, the handset is not even one year old and its price has already been permanently cut by $200.

When Essential launched its first smartphone, it went on sale for $700, but possibly due to low customer interest it dropped the price down to just $500. The Essential Phone is available for this price at various US retailers, but Essential’s online store is selling it for $500 as well.

However, if you want a slightly better deal, you can have the Essential Phone along with a 360-degree …
