Apple hits 38 million paying subscribers to Apple Music; update on the "Race to $1 trillion"

Apple announced today that it now has 38 million paying subscribers for its streaming music app, Apple Music. That is a pick up of 2 million new subscribers, or 5.6%, since February. The leading streaming music provider remains Spotify, which has 71 million paid customers for its premium service. Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, passed along the latest stats at the annual SXSW in Austin, Texas. Apple Music launched on June 30, 2015. Spotify had a huge head start as it debuted October 7th, 2008.

Google's Tez mobile wallet app makes monthly bill paying a snap in India

Who enjoys paying their monthly bills?  Nobody, really. But in India, Google has an app called the Tez mobile wallet that starting today, allows payments to be made in seconds. Adding a new company to pay needs to be done only once, and when those monthly utility bills are received, Tez alerts you to their arrival with timely notifications. The app currently supports 80 invoice mailing companies, including consumer service firms like Reliance Energy, BSES and DishTV.

Spotify now has 70 million paying subscribers, nearly double that of Apple Music

The world’s most popular streaming service Spotify has announced that it has added 10 million paying subscribers in the last six months and now has a total of 70 million paying subs.
Unlike Apple Music, Spotify also offers free, ad-monetized music streaming. It has more than 70 million subscribers using that free service, so counting the two types of Spotify listeners together, the service now has over 140 million total subs.

Rumor: Apple and Comcast in talks to stream first run movies to paying subscribers

The latest rumor circulating near the popcorn stand at your local theater (where a box of Jujubes and a Coke will cost you $50) is that Apple and Comcast are teaming up to offer a service that would allow both firms to stream first run movies to customers. And by first run, we mean that these are films that are still playing in theaters. Apple and Comcast are said to be in talks with major Hollywood studios about this plan.

Spotify now owns twice the number of paying subscribers as Apple Music has

Streaming music service Spotify announced today that it has 60 million paid subscribers to its premium offering. That is more than twice the amount of paying subscribers that Apple has for its Apple Music service. Both Spotify and Apple charge $9.99 for their top tier plans. Spotify does have a free ad-supported tier, which is something that Apple doesn’t have. On the other hand, Apple Music does have a free 3-month trial for all new subscribers, which is something that its rival does not offer.
