Google officially rebrands Android Wear to Wear OS

What started as a rumor a few days ago was confirmed earlier today by Google: Android Wear has been rebranded. Starting today, Google’s platform for smartwatches will be called Wear OS, a wearables operating system for everyone.

The change will affect more than 50 smartwatches that made their debut since the launch of Android Wear. The new name is supposed to better reflect Google’s technology and vision, the company said in a blog post.

As our technology and partnerships have evolved, so have our users. In 2017, one out of three new Android Wear watch owners also used an iPhone. …

Picture of Acer's rumored Chrome OS powered tablet grabbed from now deleted tweet

Just the second day into 2018, we told you that Samsung was allegedly working on a Chrome OS powered tablet to be powered by a high end Intel processor. But Sammy’s Chrome OS powered slate might not end up being the first such device to hit the market. An image taken from a now deleted tweet shows an Acer tablet that is said to be running on Chrome OS. The picture was snapped by someone attending the Bett education and technology show in London, and tweeted yesterday.

Google has dropped hints in the past about allowing manufacturers to use Chrome OS on a variety of form factors, including …

Android updates to improve with "Google Unified Push". Developers worried over Android 9 becoming a more restrictive OS

Android has always been synonymous with two things: a very open, highly customizable operating system, which often gets molded in whatever way device manufacturers or developers and users deem fit; and slow updates. Nowever, both of these things might shift a bit in the opposite direction — we might be getting a bit more of a locked-down OS and faster updates once Android 9 P rolls out. According to a couple of reports, at least.

Google Unified Push to improve updates
The first one comes from Android-centric tech blog GoAndroid. It talks of a so-called “Google …

T-Mobile's Samsung Gear S3 is now getting the Tizen OS 3.0 update

Samsung began the roll-out of Tizen OS 3.0 update for the Gear S3 about two months ago, but then it halted it due to an issue with battery life. A few weeks later, the push out was resumed and Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches all over the world started to receive the Value Pack once again.

However, T-Mobile customers had to wait a bit more for the update to arrive on their smartwatches, something that usually happens with carrier-bound devices.

Well, apparently, the wait is finally over as T-Mobile is now pushing Tizen OS 3.0 to the Gear S3 Frontier and Classic. …

Samsung reportedly working on a Chrome OS tablet with high-end CPU and camera

Samsung is reportedly hard at work on a new Surface-style, detachable tablet, codenamed “Nautilus”, which will be powered by Google’s Chrome OS. What’s more interesting, is that Samsung is apparently not aiming for the high-end, not holding back in the hardware department, even when it comes to the camera. That’s interesting, considering how Chromebooks have never had great cameras (not that anyone’s complaining).
According to Engadget, “Nautilus” will be powered by a 7th gen Intel Core CPU, much like the competition from Microsoft, and will also employ a Sony IMX258 …

FYI: WhatsApp ending support for BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 on December 31

WhatsApp announced last year that it will stop supporting some mobile platforms that don’t offer the kind of capabilities the company needs to expand the app’s features. The first to go away are BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 mobile platforms, so if you use a smartphone powered by either of the two operating systems, you’ll want to know WhatsApp will end support for them on December 31.

Although in the first announcement WhatsApp said the application will stop working on mobile platforms that are no longer supported, a more recent update suggests users will not …

Android Oreo Go is now available to developers: Lightweight OS catering to low-end devices

After releasing Android 8.1 Oreo to select devices today, Google also unleashed the lightweight Android Oreo Go that is tailored for the lowest-end Android devices that boast the humblest specs. Aimed at devices with the minuscule amount of either 512 or 1GB of RAM and rather limited native storage, Android Oreo Go comes with lightweight version of some rather popular Google apps, like YouTube, Maps, Google Assistant, Gmail, and others.
However, Android Oreo Go is only available to developers and manufacturers at this point – eligible end-users will …
