Microsoft patent application explains why the company wants to produce a folding phone

Over the last week or so, we’ve passed along some of the latest information regarding a folding device that could be released as soon as next year by Microsoft’s Surface division. With telephonic capabilities, and the phone-like size that the product transforms into, there is no telling exactly what Microsoft will call it. However, we might get some sense of what the thinking is in Redmond by reading part of a recent patent application that was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The patent application includes plenty of drawings showing a free-stop 360 degree …

Foldable Microsoft device could be the mythical Surface Phone

Yesterday, we showed you images from the latest patent filing made by Microsoft related to a folding Surface tablet. The report yesterday indicated that the device will come with the ability to make and take calls. Today, a tweet from Windows tipster Walking Cat revealed a link to a list of apps in the Windows Store. These …

Microsoft Surface Phone? New leaks suggest it's still happening!

It was about a couple of years ago when Microsoft called it quits on the hardware side of the smartphone market and said it will focus on developing its software suite for mobile, continue to develop Windows 10 for all platforms, but leave phone-building to 3rd party manufacturers. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL were the last top-tier Windows phones made by Redmond itself.

But rumors that Microsoft is planning another top-tier phone just refuse to die. The so-called Surface Phone is a mythical creature that lives in legends that may or may not turn out to be true.

Microsoft Edge passes 1 million downloads on Android

Only a week out of beta, Microsoft’s Edge browser has already made significant ground in the Google Play Store, passing 1 million downloads. With this traction, Edge shot up the rankings to 3rd place in the ‘top free communication’ rankings in Google Play. While its download numbers still lag far behind the behemoths of Chrome and Firefox, Edge’s unique feature-set may be able to help it gain more ground in the coming months and years. For comparison, since the iOS launch on December 1 the app has only reached over 10,000 downloads on Apple’s App Store due to the cap on beta sign-ups. …

Google, Microsoft concerned that a Broadcom acquisition of Qualcomm will benefit Apple

Google and Microsoft are among some of the major tech outfits that have complained to Qualcomm about the ramifications of a Broadcom acquisition of the chipmaker. Currently, Broadcom has a $70 a share deal on the table ($105 billion) for Qualcomm consisting of $60 in cash and $10 in Broadcom shares. While there are sources suggesting that Qualcomm would be a willing seller at $80 a share and up, Broadcom is looking to install its own candidates on Qualcomm’s board, hoping that a proxy battle can help it win the company at the current bid price.
