Amazon passes Alphabet to become the second largest publicly traded company after Apple

Earlier this month, we told you that even though it was the third largest company in the world after Apple and Google parent Alphabet, Amazon could be the first company to have a trillion dollar valuation. That’s because over the last year, Amazon’s stock has risen 85% year-over-year while Apple’s shares have grown 24% over the same time period. Extrapolate this trend into the future, and Amazon will be first to one trillion in August with Apple hitting the mark one week later.

On Tuesday, Amazon’s stock (AMZN) rose 2.7% to $1,586.51 while Apple (AAPL) declined .03% to $175.24 and Alphabet …

Move over, Apple and Samsung, the world has a new largest phone maker

Apple has seemingly dethroned Samsung for the title of the world’s largest smartphone maker in Q4, selling 77.3 million iPhones, against Samsung’s 74.4 million handsets. Granted, Samsung made about $30 of net profit per handset, while Apple makes $200+, but when it comes to topping the market share charts, it’s been a fight between these two last year, followed by the rise of Huawei.

For the first time in a while, however, we have a new company that can be called the world’s largest phone maker, and it’s neither Apple, nor Samsung, but the BBK Group. The Chinese conglomerate …

Samsung dethrones Intel to become the world's largest chip maker by revenue

Samsung just announced record $50 billion profit for last year, and a record Q4 with $14.1 billion earned largely from selling marked-up components, rather than Galaxies. The parts in question include memory modules, displays and processors, but it’s the chip business that made it rain for Samsung in 2017. Buried in the annual report is the fact that the department made $69 billion of revenue for Samsung last year, while the former king Intel (also knows as Chipzilla), made do with $63 billion.
This is a huge shift in the silicon business, no matter how you slice …

Google Pixel 2 shows the largest bump in activations during the Christmas holiday weekend

Despite recent reports revealing multiple issues with the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL (mostly with the screen and speaker), the two handsets enjoyed a surprisingly strong Christmas weekend and showed more growth in activations than the Apple iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The percentage increase is computed by subtracting the number of activations from the Christmas holiday weekend compared to the average number from the prior three weekends. A phone is considered to be activated once it starts opening and using apps.

At the top of the list is the Google Pixel 2, which …

California’s Thomas Fire in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties has eclipsed the 2003 Cedar Fire as the largest wildfire in Golden State history, at a whopping 273,400 acres. This puts the blaze’s burned area as larger than New York City, and nearly the equivalent of the sprawling city of Los Angeles.

The fire has destroyed 1,063 structures and damaged 280 more. During the past week, firefighters have made significant gains, with the state reporting 78 percent containment as of early Sunday morning. The record size was eclipsed on Dec. 22, with additional growth possible before full containment is made sometime in early 2018. Read more…
