Google Pixel 2 shows the largest bump in activations during the Christmas holiday weekend

Despite recent reports revealing multiple issues with the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL (mostly with the screen and speaker), the two handsets enjoyed a surprisingly strong Christmas weekend and showed more growth in activations than the Apple iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The percentage increase is computed by subtracting the number of activations from the Christmas holiday weekend compared to the average number from the prior three weekends. A phone is considered to be activated once it starts opening and using apps.

At the top of the list is the Google Pixel 2, which …

Thomas Fire becomes largest blaze in California history, during state's worst fire year

California’s Thomas Fire in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties has eclipsed the 2003 Cedar Fire as the largest wildfire in Golden State history, at a whopping 273,400 acres. This puts the blaze’s burned area as larger than New York City, and nearly the equivalent of the sprawling city of Los Angeles.

The fire has destroyed 1,063 structures and damaged 280 more. During the past week, firefighters have made significant gains, with the state reporting 78 percent containment as of early Sunday morning. The record size was eclipsed on Dec. 22, with additional growth possible before full containment is made sometime in early 2018. Read more…

For a very long time, Samsung and Apple have ruled the smartphone industry, not necessarily through innovation, but through the constant high number of smartphones sold each year. However, it looks like other brands are closing in to dethrone the two from their leadership positions.

A new report from Counterpoint Research shows that Huawei is now the second world’s largest smartphone vendor in the world, having surpassed Apple thanks to strong June/July sales.

This is a significant milestone for Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone brand with a growing …

"T-Mobile Unlimited with Netflix On Us" is the next Un-carrier move by the nation's third largest carrier

T-Mobile had hinted that it would be introducing its latest Un-carrier plan on September 6th. Sure enough, the nation’s most innovative wireless operator has once again addressed a pain point and figured out a way for consumers to relieve the pain. This time, the agony comes from carrier bundles. Trying to get consumers to spend extra on mobile bundles explains why Verizon and AT&T have been seeking to buy companies that provide content such as AOL, Yahoo and DirecTV.

Starting on September 12th (hmm, something else is supposed to happen on that date), if you have a T-Mobile One account …

Former Verizon subscribers made up the largest percentage of its rivals recent customer additions

During the second quarter of this year, Verizon made the biggest contribution to its rival carriers in the form of recently added customers. Based on data from Cowen and Company Equity Research, more customers from Verizon left to switch to another operator than any other U.S. based wireless carrier. Cowen says that this indicates a more competitive market in the wireless industry. It also suggests that consumers aren’t willing anymore to shell out more money for a premium wireless experience now that the difference between carriers is fading.

Cowen analyst Colby Synesael blames this on …

10,000 steps a day? Largest fitness app study reveals why the US is fatter than Mexico

You must walk at least 10,000 steps a day to be in good health. Ever heard of that mantra? It might not be the most accurate way to measure activity, but the “10,000 steps” theory is built into the vast majority of fitness apps that use our smartphones as pedometers. Various researchers are now looking into the statement, and coming up with numbers smaller or larger, yet their overarching conclusion is that actually we have never had the ability to gain so much insight into people’s moving habits as with the proliferation of iOS and Android phones, or wearables that have activity …
