The Changing Face of the Indian Retail Consumer

The face of the Indian retail consumer has undergone total transformation. They have come a long way from those days of yore, before the liberalization of the Indian economy, when saving was the mantra, and anything that diverts away from it was frowned upon, and looked at with dismay. Globalization and the media have brought the world closer, opening doors to cultures, trends and lifestyle that were considered taboo, alien and unknown to them. And with the spiraling Indian economy, the behavioral pattern of the average Indian consumer has seen a sea change.

Increasing disposable incomes, a favorable demography, the progressive growth in terms of working women and lifestyle changes with a high penetration of the media (that has brought the world closer to our lives) are the key drivers behind this spending spree of the nouveau global middle class Indian. As the salary package of skilled professionals rocket to a new high, with many perks and compensation coming in, the swelling double income middle class populace living in isolated nuclear families, have made the jump from ‘zero spending’ and ‘frugal living’ to one of ‘zero saving’ and ‘living life king size’.

As the wallet fattens, consumers gradually develop a predilection and penchant for luxury products, and branded goods. With the retail malls and outlets for branded goods mushrooming up everywhere, and fuelled by the new found confidence and attitude of ‘shop till you drop’, they slowly move from ‘kirana shopping’ to ‘mall hopping’, looking for quality, that was previously a non-issue. The rapid blitz of leading global brands and other domestic giants in the organized retail sector, offering goods and services that were earlier unavailable and the increasing awareness of the latest trends be it fashion, music or entertainment, the Indian consumer has gone global.

With the paradigm shift in India’s income pyramid, the behavior of the Indian retail consumer has dramatically undergone a changeover; it has moved from the old adage of saving to a new age attitude of spending.

Carefully Plan your Store Layout when you own a Dollar Store

Those who own a dollar store and find a mistake was made in the layout of the display area inside their store are painfully aware of what this costs their business.  There are so many impacts associated with poor layouts.  They include poor to no traffic flow that can cause shoppers to ignore some aisles or even leave your store. Poor layout can also result in inadequate merchandise display area which further reduces dollar store sales and thus impacts dollar store profits.  Of course poorly laid out displays also increase security risk for you and your employees.

It is critically important to measure the display floor carefully before opening.  Be sure to draw the perfect store layout before installing even one display rack.  Keep the following criteria in-mind as you determine the optimum layout.

#1) Safety must always be your number one concern when you own a dollar store.  Blind corners, sharp equipment and display shelving edges, stacks of merchandise filling aisles and blind corners filled with trip hazards all present safety risks to your shoppers and employees.  Design your store to facilitate the flow of traffic and to eliminate these hazards.

#2) Traffic flow and ease of movement comes next.  Never set up aisle so shoppers are expected to walk into a dead end and then turn around and try to work their way through other shoppers to move on to the next aisle.  Those who know about or can see the dead end will avoid entering the aisle.  Watch your dollar store sales and dollar store profits drop as this occurs.  Always provide room at both ends of every aisle to allow for shoppers to move on to the next aisle.  This may require a drawing few versions of your layout to accomplish, but the planning will pay rewards in the form of happy shoppers and more dollar store sales.

#3) Maximizing display area for best selling departments needs to be factored in to your layout.  Build dollar store sales and dollar store profits by providing adequate space for the better selling and higher margin departments.  Party goods are a perfect example.  Many of these in-demand items are also among the most profitable in your store.  Facilitate sales by making party goods easy to find and by providing the appropriate amount of display space.  Other, tight margin items such as household cleaners can receive a smaller area in a much less visible location without hurting overall dollar store sales.  Plan all of this into your store layout before your store fixtures even arrive.

#4) Do not forget security when you own a dollar store.  We’ve already covered safety, but what about security?  Create a layout that prevents your dollar store profits from walking out the door.  Your layout can go a long way toward preventing this from happening.  Make it easy for those at the cash register to see the full length of as many aisles as possible.  That view will go a long way toward helping to reduce shop lifting.

To your success when you own a dollar store!

Airphone No.1 – The Ultra Thin Phone

You like touch screen phones with iPhone style; you have to see the latest Chinese phone from Shenzhen High-tech District. It’s called the AirPhone No.1 and it has been built to make all other touch screen phones looked obsolete.

The recipe for the AirPhone No.1 is “simple”, you take a i68+ phone style, you step on it until you reach 8,5 mm thickness (same as the Apple Touch) to give it an ultra slim design, you replace the plastic back cover by an all  stainless steel one for a chromium look, you switch the old 3,2 inch touch screen by the latest 3.5 inch HVGA capacitive screen, the old 0,3 megapixel still camera by a 2.0 megapixel with a maximum output of 1600*1200 pixel, the everlasting MTK6225 CPU by the Mtk6235b and as you still have more space left in the phone, you add WIFI and EDGE support, a built in memory of 2Gb, an 2,5 mm universal audio jack, dual-loudspeakers, the FLV (Youtube and
Dailymotion) and a RM (Real Media) video format supported then, add few games.

The rest of the spec is what you usually find in Sciphone i68+ or CECT i9 phones: Quad band, GPRS, Bluetooth, radio, a support for an external memory card and a java virtual machine to install new applications.

To keep the AirPhone No.1 thin, the manufacturer had to make the battery part of the phone (Built-in) and it’s only a single SIM.

Why A Lawn Care Business is a Great Way to Earn Money in This Economy

The advantages of starting and running your own lawn care business are significant. Your “office” can simply be your desk at home; there is no need to rent or own any commercial space to conduct business. This is a huge money-saver! When you have to follow-up with clients or print marketing material, your commute is measured in minutes – from your bedroom to your home computer.

Assuming you take on jobs that are relatively close to your residence, your commute time to jobs is also relatively small. When you are at work, you are not confined to sitting behind a desk all day. You get to enjoy the fresh air and freedom that comes with working in the lawn care industry. You will benefit from the physical exercise that comes with mowing lawns or pruning bushes.

Finally, another advantage – and this is perhaps the most important one – is not having a boss to answer to! You control your own time, your own schedule, and your own income. You can show up at work (i.e. a neighbor’s backyard) essentially anytime during the daylight hours, leaving you plenty of freedom to schedule other activities during the day.

However, like all businesses, the lawn care business is one that requires hard work, dedication, and skill. You must be physically fit enough to handle heavy machinery for long periods of time. You must be able to occasionally lift equipment onto and off of trucks. You must be reasonably proficient at mowing lawns, and performing other routine maintenance tasks. Of course, if you intend to hire laborers to do all the actual physical labor for you, well, then you do not need to lift a pair of pruning shears, and you can just focus on the management and supervisory aspects of the business.

Recent studies have shown that there are tens of thousands independent lawn care service providers in the United States. However, the number of people actually in this industry is probably significantly larger, since many of them may not be reporting their income on tax forms. These people may be accepting cash as payment, which is hard to track, and therefore, they may not be included in some of the figures that are reported nationally.

So, you might wonder how big is the need for a lawn care business? Who would your potential clients be? Well, they include:

  • Individuals who cannot handle the equipment to maintain their lawns
  • Homeowners wishing to sell their home and need to increase their home’s value by improving its curb appeal
  • People who migrate to warmer climates during the winter months but do not want their yards to be neglected
  • Commerical real estate property managers who have huge amounts of green space to be maintained (golf courses, gardens, colleges…)

Of course, like all businesses, this one requires hard work, dedication, and a continual commitment to obtaining new customers. However, starting a lawn care business provides fantastic opportunities to be your own boss and earn a substantial income. With solid business planning in place, the potential for success in the lawn care industry is unlimited!

SBA 8a Program Eligibility – The $200,000 Threshold for Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Among the many 8a business development program eligibility requirements, the applicant for 8a Certification must have an average AGI over the past two tax years of less than $200,000.

What is the definition of Adjusted Gross Income?

Adjusted gross income (AGI) is a tax term for an amount used in the calculation of an individual’s income tax liability. AGI is calculated by taking the applicants gross income and subtracting their maximum allowable adjustments. AGI is the last number on the first page of the Form 1040.

How do I determine my Adjusted Gross Income for 8a Certification Purposes?

The easiest way to initially determine if you exceed the $200,000 threshold, averaged over the last two years is to add up the AGI number reported on the first page of your last two years of federal tax returns. If you add these two numbers, divide them by two and result in a number larger than $200,000 you must do further analysis. If the number is less than $200,000 you do not exceed the threshold regardless of what is discussed below.

If your resulting calculation shows more than $200,000, and you are a married, filing the taxes jointly, you should then separate the portion of any income reported on the tax return between the applicant and their spouse (e.g Line 7 (1040). Wages, salaries, tips, etc = $100,000 (Applicant’s portion, $40,000 – Spouse’s portion, $60,000). Once you have separated out all of the income reported on the tax return between the applicant and their spouse again take the total for the last two years and divide them by two. If the resulting number is still larger than $200,000 you must do further analysis. If the number is less than $200,000 you do not exceed the threshold regardless of what is discussed below.

One final analysis can be performed to see if you still exceed the $200,000 threshold. If the applicant business concern is an LLC or S-Corporation you may:

1. Deduct any income associated with the business concern that was reinvested into the business concern, less any distributions.

2. Deduct any income used to pay the LLC or S-Corporation Federal taxes within 12 months of the distribution of income.

Determining your AGI can be somewhat complex for 8a Certification purposes. Cloveer has a service that can determine your AGI should you need further assistance. Please contact us for further information.

2017 Apple iPhone units might lag compared to rival handsets

It would appear as though Apple’s 2017 iPhones are going to have connectivity speeds lagging behind competing handsets. While iPhone rivals will be able to run at a download speed of as much as one gigabit per second, an issue that Apple is having now with its modem suppliers could very well have a negative impact on the iPhone later this year. Qualcomm can sell to Apple right now a modem that will support 1 Gb/sec data speeds. While Intel is working on a modem with similar capabilities, it won’t be ready for the next iPhone models, which are expected to be unveiled in September.

How To Get Short-Term Cell Phone Service For Your Business

Business owners are tired of paying for cell phone service year round when their business needs vary.  They are frustrated when they have to sign a long-term contract for mobile phones that may be intermittently in use. Business owners are looking for solutions for their changing needs depending on the time of year, weather or the economy. There is no need to sign a cell phone service contract in order to have cell phone plans.

The solution to save money is simple.  Go to WirelessWithout.com and use a cell phone plan from Sprint, AT&T, Alltel, Unicel, or Verizon. There are no activation fees, no start up fees and no termination fees of any kind. Customers can change their cell phone plan, change their wireless provider, or change their mind with no activation fees, no termination fees and no suspension fees, ever.  These plans are not prepaid cell phone plans but rather the same plans available from major wireless providers with a contract.

Small or large businesses are charged the same usage rates as they would pay the provider directly for service. There is never an obligation to continue service or sign a cell phone contract and customers can stop or start one or all of their wireless lines at anytime with no penalties and no early termination fees.

Compare this to signing a contract with a service provider with a guarantee your company will be charged for monthly service regardless if the cell phone is in use.  To terminate the contract, cell phone companies will charge an early termination fee per line.

For more information about wireless plan options, you can visit their website at WirelessWithout.com

The Importance of Logo in Branding

Logo symbolizes your business and creates an image of your business in the eyes of your customers. Logo, is one of the many important elements of business branding. Sadly, it’s importance is often transparent to many. Either the business doesn’t even have one or it’s not good enough.

The design of the logo and the process of creating one are similar to creating your brand. Your logo has to go together with your brand, with the ability to deliver positive values to your customers. Your logo should also be unique and meaningful so you will shine your market. Proper logo design creates similar effect as proper branding; it is essential to have one for branding purposes and gives your business an identity.

Have you thought of just grabbing one of the “free” logos that you can find on the Internet? Don’t go through that road! You need to be serious about your logo. By having a professional designing it for you at the first place will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

Some people might oppose the importance of logo in branding. This is because you don’t necessarily have to have a logo to establish your brand. However, you will look a lot more professional and unique if you have a logo attached to your brand. A logo will help you significantly in building your image and identify along with your brand. That’s what’s important about having a logo. After all, humans are visual species!

A logo is successful when it allows the immediate recognition of the business and represents the business’ character or attitude. A successful logo is a guaranteed marker.

Question: I can’t find a logo that people could remember, such as McDonalds.

Answer: Doesn’t matter how good or how appealing your logo is, without proper marketing, professional products or services, and excellent customer service, people will NOT remember your logo. In another words, build a great company and people will remember your logo.

Once when you have your logo created, you should be consistent with the logo – place it wherever possible: business card, letters, emails, website, products, invoices…etc. This is also why proper logo design at the first place is very important, because changing your logo will have an impact on your business’ identity, professionalism, and credibility.

Obtaining Trucking Permits To Operate Your Trucking Company: Necessary And Daunting

If you’ve decided to open your own commercial trucking company (and congratulations if you have!) you’re going to need to acquire several trucking permits before you can haul your first load.

Once you’ve decided on your company name and what kind of company you want to be (sole proprietor, Limited Liability Corporation, etc.), you’ll need to register your company’s name in the state in which you reside. You also will need to get a Federal ID number for your company.

Then you’ll need to get your Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Authority for Trucking. This also is known as your Interstate operating authority. Depending on the scope of your business, you may need to acquire several operating authorities based on what kind of cargo you may carry and the area in which you want to operate legally.

These operating authorities also will determine what kind of insurance and financial responsibility your trucking company will have to maintain.

Some additional trucking permits you’ll need to acquire are a Department of Transportation (DOT) number and Unified Carrier Registration (UCR). You’ll also need to obtain your IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement).

The IFTA is an agreement among states to report fuel taxes by interstate motor carriers. To register for your IFTA, you’ll need to have established a place of business in the state in which your trucking company will be performed. Your fleet’s operating records must be maintained (or made available) in that state. Mileage also must be accumulated in that state. You also must operate in at least one other IFTA area.

The trucking permits above are just a few of the permits you’ll need to acquire to start or operate your trucking company. Obtaining these can be daunting and delays are common — you’re dealing with government entities, after all. An “authority service” can help you with these many details.

A well-established authority service knows the ins and outs of the transportation bureaucracy and will make it a point to always be up to date on the latest laws and changes to existing laws and the requirements to obtain trucking permits.

An authority service also will be able to help you determine the considerable insurance coverage your trucking company will need to purchase. A well-established authority service can be a great “partner” to have as you start, operate and build your trucking business.
