Dropped phones cracked screens and the death of awareness

I am like a dog, ears pricked and attention diverted, desperately trying to spot the offending sound. It’s a violent combination of bombastic crash and subtle crack, a unique flavor of dread.

Dropped-phones-cracked-screens-death -awareness

It’s the sound of a phone dropping from hand or pocket or table or anything — gravity doesn’t discern — to the cold hard ground. Occasionally, you get lucky and the phone lands on its back, and you see your last interaction — Instagram, let’s be honest — staring back at you, the dog photo not nearly as cute dimmed by the judgemental harshness of the late afternoon sun. But often the screen is hidden from view, phone face down, a tense few moments where you brace yourself for the potential heartache and accompanying dread in knowing all the subsequent steps you’ll have to take to replace the shattered glass, and hoping that’s all it is.

There are no definitive numbers to work with, but a number of studies have attempted to figure out how often people drop their phones, and how often those accidents lead to permanent damage. A 2011 Plaxo study estimates that 33% of people regularly drop their phones on a regular basis — some 20% in to the toilet (which, with a bit of luck, may be less damaging) — while a 2013 study from Tech21 estimates that 90% of people drop their phones at least once a month. Around 5% said they drop their devices six times per month.

For most people, it’s not a matter of if but when, and though the materials used on the outside of our beloved devices have somewhat improved over the past few years, nothing is infallible. Corning, one of the most important companies few people know about, introduced the fifth generation of its Gorilla Glass substrate in 2016, and believes that it is the strongest smartphone cover out there, “surviving 1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time,” according to the company’s marketing materials. Corning, headquartered in the New York town of the same name, has become synonymous with the front glass of most Android phones, and while there are competitors — Dragontrail is the MediaTek to Corning’s Qualcomm — Gorilla Glass has practically become the Kleenex of mobile screen covers.

But even the strongest glass is still breakable (for now), and unless we outfit the world with carpet (which could get gross pretty quickly) there isn’t an alternative to trying to make our devices more durable. A worrying trend, and one that has been criticized since the debut of the all-glass Nexus 4, is outfitting both the front and back of a phone in glass. From the Galaxy S7 to the Honor 8 and many in between, the Gorilla Glass sandwich doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon — the Galaxy S8 looks to have more glass, front and back, then ever — so we’re just going to have to deal with it.

The sight of a person, or groups of people, walking with phones in hand, reading the news or catching up on a Twitter feed, is all too common on busy city sidewalks.
If we assume that people are not generally getting clumsier, the rising prevalence of cracked and broken phones due to drops is likely due to the increasing number of hours people spend each day using their phones. The sight of a person, or groups of people, walking with phones in hand, reading the news or catching up on a Twitter feed, is all too common on busy city sidewalks, and the more we take the technology for granted, the less careful we are with the thing itself. Smartphones may be dropping in cost overall, but they’re rising in importance in our lives, and a cracked screen is more than an inconvenience — it’s a tragedy.

And yet the same Tech21 survey said that many people are willing to continue using a phone with a cracked screen because the idea of having to get it repaired or replaced — often out of pocket, since accidental damage is not covered under most manufacturer warranties — is stressful and, often, traumatic.

I hate seeing cracked screens. It’s a visceral reaction, a combination of anger at the owner and sadness for the phone. But that’s dumb; I should feel angry at the phone for breaking, and sad for the owner who has to go through the hassle of replacing it. I’ve been there; you’ve been there. We’ve all dealt with a cracked screen or at the very least damage a phone’s casing.

For a few years, high-quality polycarbonate — devices like the HTC One X, Nokia Lumia 1020 and iPhone 5C — were all the rage, and while they may not have looked as nice (debatable, since the Lumia phones were perfection), they tended to be very durable. But no material — metal, glass, polycarbonate — is unbreakable and the most important factor to preventing drops is being aware of your surroundings.

In Toronto, where I live, there has been a huge increase in the number of pedestrian deaths in recent years, many of which are caused by people engrossed in their phones as they cross streets or step into intersections. Such accidents are increasingly common in big cities throughout the world, and lest this turns into a PSA against using one’s phone out in public, it’s clear that people are becoming more cavalier about using phones in places that a few years ago would have been considered verboten.

A dropped smartphone is not always a broken one, and avoiding the occurrence completely is likely impossible, but being aware of when and how these drops happen is the first step towards realizing that our devices, as essential (and addictive) as anything we use on a daily basis, can be made safer by being more careful.

And, if you can’t, or just refuse to be, more careful, there are always rugged phones and thick-as-a-brick cases that will probably save you from yourself.

Tesla reveals just how owners will be charged to Supercharge

Using a Tesla Supercharger will come with a super charge. Well, that depends on how you define “super,” of course. On Thursday, two months after its initial announcement regarding the payment structure around its Supercharger network, Tesla informed the public of some of the details of how it plans to “make long-distance travel a seamless experience for drivers,” at a cost.

“Cars have always represented independence and the freedom to travel wherever and whenever people want to go,” Tesla wrote in a blog post. “To enable this freedom, building a charging network that provides quick, convenient, and long-distance travel is critical to the adoption of electric vehicles. One of our top priorities this year is to significantly increase capacity of our Supercharger network.”

So how will it go about doing this? Unfortunately, the answer isn’t quite as straightforward as you might like. First off, Tesla Model S and Model X cars ordered after January 15, 2017 will be granted 400kWh (kilowatt-hours) of free Supercharging credits, equivalent to about 1,000 miles, every year on the anniversary of their delivery. Tesla claims that its research has suggested that 400kWh actually accounts for the yearly amount of long-distance driving the average customer needs.

However, should you be an above-average driver, you’ll be charged “a small fee to Supercharge.” If you’re a resident of North America, pricing remains consistent within each state or province, whereas overseas, pricing is fixed within a country. In most areas of the world, you’ll be asked to pay per kWh, described as “the fairest way to pay for the exact energy need.” But that won’t be the case in all areas of the world — some local regulations require Tesla to charge per minute of usage instead. That said, Tesla says that it’s “actively working with regulators to update the rules.”

Ultimately, this Supercharge charging structure works out to about $15 for a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and about $120 from Los Angeles to New York. You can check out additional details about the program here.

Self driving Audis of 2020 will be powered by Nvidia artificial intelligence

Audi and Nvidia have been collaborating for some time, but at CES 2017, the companies made their biggest joint announcement yet. Using artificial intelligence and deep learning technology, the companies will bring fully automated driving to the roads by 2020.

To achieve this, Audi will leverage Nvidia’s expertise in artificial intelligence, the fruits of which are already being shown at CES. Audi’s Q7 Piloted Driving Concept is fitted with Nvidia’s Drive PX 2 processor and after only four days of “training,” the vehicle is already driving itself over a complex road course. This is due to the Drive PX 2’s incredible ability to learn on the go, which is a far cry from the first driverless cars that needed pre-mapped routes to function properly.

“Nvidia is pioneering the use of deep learning AI to revolutionize transportation,” Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said. “Audi’s adoption of our Drive computing platform will accelerate the introduction of next-generation automated vehicles, moving us closer to a future of greater driving safety and new mobility services.”

In this instance, the fully automated 2020 goal refers to Level 4 autonomy, which is defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers as, “Specific performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task, even if a human driver does not respond appropriately to a request to intervene.” In layman’s terms, that means a Level 4 car can operate independently and perform all safety-critical driving functions, however, the driver may have to take over in certain conditions such as rough dirt roads.

Before 2020 rolls around, Audi will introduce the world’s first Level 3 autonomous car with the next-generation A8. While a Level 4 vehicle can drive itself in nearly any environment, a Level 3 car requires more human intervention and only acts autonomously in certain situations such as highway driving. As far as the A8 goes, the vehicle will be fitted with Traffic Jam Pilot, which will allow the driver to hand over steering, throttle, and braking control to the computer at speeds up to 35 mph.

In addition to the Audi announcement, Nvidia is adding significant capability to its current Drive PX system in the form of an AI Co-Pilot. Intended to monitor as well as assist the driver, the Co-Pilot can keep an eye on your mental state by mapping your face to detect your mood, tracking your eyes to make sure you’re not distracted, and even reading your lips to receive instructions when the music’s blaring.
Will an AI Co-Pilot be helpful or distracting? Does it give you 2001: A Space Odyssey flashbacks? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Apple iCar Release Date Rumours

Apple iCar release date rumours: New evidence for iCar as Apple sets up team to create driverless OS

You might think that you’ve heard it all when it comes to Apple rumours, but the latest and most out-there yet is the idea that the company is working on a car, or an iCar as it’s often called. But the number of rumours about the iCar and the mounting evidence is beginning to convince us that maybe an Apple Car really is being built. Here, we bring you all of the rumours about the Apple Car, including iCar UK release date rumours, feature rumours and images of what the iCar might look like.

Updated 1 November: Apple still hasn’t confirmed it is working on an iCar, though it is definitely working on a driverless car OS, having recently set up a Canadian unit for the task for which it has poached several software engineers from QNX, a subsidiary of cell phone maker BlackBerry. This news comes a little more than a month after we heard Apple was in talks with McLaren to buy a “strategic stake” in the company (a rumour denied by McLaren). Apple is also allegedly looking to buy San Francisco startup Lit Motors outright, as it has several international self-driving patents.

Apple Car UK release date: When is the iCar coming out?

Of course, there’s nothing specific as it’s early days, but Bloomberg has said that the Car could arrive in 2020, after speaking with sources who say that’s when it will begin production of its own electric vehicle.

It tends to take automakers around five to seven years to develop a car, so 2020 sounds like a good bet to us. The Wall Street Journal, however, says that the Apple Car could appear as soon as 2019. However, on 17 October 2016 Apple halted its developments of an electric car, and instead put its focus on an ‘autonomous self-driving car’ – as reported by 9to5Mac.

It’s said that part of the problem was with the manufacturing process of the cars, whereby Apple couldn’t source components, presumably at a good price – as reported by Bloomberg.

Whenever the iCar comes out, we would expect it to support TouchID to be opened and used, where you would use your fingerprint as a car key. This innovative, but interesting way of unlocking a car is a popular idea among techies who see the Apple iCar being launched. This would provide better security to those who own a car and be a means of never losing your keys!

Apple Car: Workers laid off

According to a report from the New York Times in September, Apple was said to be rethinking its self-driving car strategy as other tech giants like Google and even Uber appear ready to start road testing their competing efforts. According to three people briefed on Apple’s move (that aren’t allowed to speak about it publicly, of course), the company has laid off dozens of employees working on the project, signalling issues with Apple’s ambitious car project.

It’s not the first time that Apple’s car project has been in trouble, as the company had to draft in Bob Mansfield, Apple veteran, in July 2016 to oversee the project and drive it forward as no real progress had been made. Apple is said to have told affected employees that the layoffs were a part of a “reboot” of the project, and of course, Apple has refused to officially make a comment.

Apple Car: How many will be made?

A report by Autocar suggests that Apple is planning on producing half a million cars a year. A (rumoured) target that is set to be ten times higher than the sales accomplished by Tesla. Within the report, Autocar also predict the iCar to be available by 2021 with a fully autonomous car available by 2026. It’s expected for Apple to make radical design changes and shake up the car industry – at least that’s what the rumours say.

Will there be an Apple Car? The evidence for the iCar

Apple Car hype has been fuelled by the company’s own Steve Cook at a shareholder meeting, in which he reportedly said of the rumoured Apple Car: “Do you remember when you were a kid, and Christmas Eve… it was so exciting. You weren’t sure what was going to be downstairs. Well, it’s going to be Christmas Eve for a while.”

Cook is clearly attempting to build hype around the idea, which means Apple’s almost certainly got plans for an iCar.

There has been talk about a mysterious Apple Car for a long time now, but in February 2015 the rumours really picked up the pace after Business Insider claimed to have spoken to an Apple employee who claims the company is working on an “exciting” new product that will “give Telsa a run for its money.”

According to the anonymous source, around 50 former Telsa employees had been “jumping ship” to work at Apple as part of its vehicle development team, and LinkedIn backs up that claim. The new employees specialise in mechanics, manufacturing and robotics. That said, Telsa has apparently hired about 150 Apple employees, so it sounds like the two companies are in a bit of a war.

Other Apple employees that hint at a future car include Doug Betts, who has 25 years of experience working for Nissan, Toyota and Fiat Chrysler. Swiss researcher Paul Furgale, who led the V-Charge project that developed self-parking cars, is also now working for Apple.

The Wall Street Journal says that Apple has several hundred people working on a vehicle development project codenamed Titan.

The Guardian also references Project Titan in a report claiming that Apple has made a self-driving car that’s ready for testing. Google and Telsa have been testing their self-driving vehicles on public roads, but Apple has apparently found a top-secret testing location called GoMentum Station, a World War II-epoch disused naval base just outside of San Francisco. The base is believed to have 20 miles of everyday public transport scenarios for Apple to test its cars on, including cattlegrids and highways. There are said to be armed soldiers patrolling the base at all times to stop anyone getting a look inside.

More evidence fuelling the theory that Apple is building an iCar stems from rumours that Apple is working with a Korean battery developer to develop a battery for Project Titan.

The car that Apple could be working on it rumoured to borrow some tech from BMW, which has been meeting with Apple according to reports. Apple seems to be particularly interested in the carbon-fibre-reinforced BMW i3 electric car. Of course, it could just be working on a deal to move its CarPlay project forward, as BMW has been an early partner for Apple’s in-car tech.

In an interview in May 2012, Apple board member Mickey Drexler said that Steve Jobs had wanted to rethink the automotive industry, which is solid proof that it’s something Apple is interested in, but whether or not that means an actual car or simply in-car tech remains to be seen.

Also in May Apple’s research and development (R&D) budget has increased from $3bn in 2012 to $10bn in 2016, a massive rise. Many suspect that this new rise in budget has more significance than a new iPhone, iPad or Mac, where rumours suggest that Apple are developing something a lot bigger, an iCar.

In an interview with the BBC, Ford boss Mark Fields believes Apple is building a car. This comes after the news of Chris Porritt, the former Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering being employed by Apple. There is therefore strong evidence that Apple is building a car and is committing serious investments towards an autonomous, tech-centred car.

Other strong evidence comes in the form of Apple patents relating to cars, including one from early 2012 that tries to solve the problem of how multiple people can all use one car but still be comfortable. It uses preferences stored in your iPhone that could automatically adjust the position of the seat, headrest and steering wheel.

It seems as if Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has ‘confirmed’ the existence of Apple’s iCar in an January 2016 interview with the BBC. When discussing Apple’s car project, he called it an “open secret” that the company is developing a rival car and that “it’s pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it”. He continued to say that “companies like Apple will probably make a compelling electric car, it seems like the obvious thing to do”. Although in our opinion, this seems more like a hunch rather than somebody with inside knowledge on the subject. Even so, Musk isn’t too bothered – when asked if he was worried about Apple entering the automotive industry by a German magazine, he replied sarcastically “Did you ever take a look at the Apple Watch?”.

While some car manufacturers are already writing off Apple’s car-related efforts, in February it seemed as if Ford was welcoming the competition, thinking it could be great for the automotive industry. Speaking to Trusted Reviews, Don Butler, Executive Director of Ford Connected Vehicles said “We welcome others joining. We welcome the activity that’s in the space. We think it’s exciting. It’s actually change that we are embracing.”

He goes on to mention Apple and Google by name, stating that he thinks the tech companies can ‘do it’. “So I think Apple can do it. I think Google can do it.” he continued. Though this isn’t confirmation that Apple is working on a car, it seems to be common knowledge throughout the automotive industry that Apple is working on something automotive related.

Will there be an Apple Car? The evidence against the iCar

You might be feeling pretty convinced that an Apple Car is in the works now, but as with any story, there are two sides to this one.

For one, most big companies work on hundreds of projects that never actually make it to market, so even if Apple is working on an iCar it doesn’t mean we’re going to be able to buy one.

Plus, we’re fairly certain that Apple is creating its own version of Google Street View, so the project in question might actually relate to Maps. In fact, in July, Apple confirmed these suspicions when it published a web page called Apple Maps vehicles that reads: “Apple is driving vehicles around the world to collect data which will be used to improve Apple Maps. Some of this data will be published in future Apple Maps updates.”

Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche says that he doesn’t think Apple will make a car, but even if it does he won’t be losing sleep over it. “If there were a rumour that Mercedes or Daimler planned to start making smartphones then [Apple] would not be sleepless at night. And the same applies to me.”

Zetsche isn’t the only car company boss that thinks an Apple Car wouldn’t be a good idea. GM vice president Bob Lutz told CNBC that the iCar could be a “gigantic money pit,” because “Apple has no experience.” He said: “There’s no reason to assume Apple will do a better job than General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota or Hyundai.”

He also said that the automotive industry is a low margin business, particularly when it comes to electric cars. “You can’t show me one company in the world that, to date, has made one nickel from electric cars,” Lutz said. “They are generally money-losers… there is absolutely no reason to assume that Apple is going to be financially successful in the electric car business.”
