Galaxy Note 8 units in France start getting Oreo. Global update soon?

Although Samsung has been working on an Android 8 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 for a while now, it did hit what seemed to be a mild speedbump back in February. The patch went live for a little bit, but it was quickly pulled by Samsung as some users began complaining of unexpected reboots after installing it.

It seems things have been fixed, as we are getting reports that users are getting their updates again. Yesterday, we heard that Verizon Galaxy S8 and S8+ units were getting Android 8 Oreo. Today, we learn that Galaxy Note 8 users in France are getting Oreo goodness!

France takes Apple and Google to court for stiffing iOS and Android developers

Leave it to the EU to fine those capitalistic pigs Apple and Google billions for offshoring taxes, and to France in particular to stand for the little developer guy. We kid, but after Google was sentenced to a $2.7 billion fine for search priorities, and Apple set aside $14 billion for eventual tax evasion levies, now France is taking both tech giants to court for “abusive trade practices,” when it comes to the third-party developers who are actually populating the App Store and Google Play.

There isn’t much detailed info about the case yet, but, in a nutshell, France claims …

France bans drivers from using a phone except in a designated spot, or for accidents and malfunctions

In France, a ruling made by the high court makes it illegal to use your smartphone to text or make a call while driving. Even if you pull over to the side of the road, which in the U.S. is considered to be the preferred option if a call needs to be answered or made, you could find yourself fined 135 euros ($167 USD) and have points added to your driving record. The country is a bit paranoid over a rise in fatal road accidents, and while smartphone use might not be the reason, a scapegoat was needed.

The ruling from the high court is the law of the land, and allows only those drivers involved …

Apple could be fined up to $11.5 billion in France after being accused of planned obsolesence

A week ago today, Apple revealed that it slows down the CPU on older iPhone units with aging batteries in order to prevent the devices from shutting down. This led a number of iPhone users to file a lawsuit against Apple for breach of contract, as Apple never informed users that it throttles the speed of their device. Apple is also being accused of slowing down the CPU on older handsets whenever the latest iPhone models are released.

Yesterday, a French consumer organization called HOP, which stands for “Stop Planned Obsolescence,” filed suit against Apple in France. Joining Apple in the …

An Air France flight en route from Paris to Los Angeles made an emergency landing in Goose Bay, Canada after its engine blew out over the Atlantic Ocean Saturday.
