Foldable phones haven’t gone much further than the concept stage at this point, but you can bet Apple will be there when they do arrive.

That could happen for iPhone as soon as 2020, according to a new analyst report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Such a form factor would give your iPhone the potential to transform into an iPad.

“Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020,” analyst Wamshi Mohan wrote (h/t CNBC). His report is based on recent meetings with Apple suppliers in Asia. Read more…

Apple is working on a foldable iPhone for 2020, analyst claims

Apple’s next major iPhone redesign may have a foldable form factor, according to Bank of America analyst Merrill Lynch. Apple was last year rumored to be working with LG on foldable display tech, but according to Lynch, Apple has now moved on to collaborate with other suppliers on the design of other flexible smartphone components.
Foldable phones have been talked up as the next big smartphone design change for quite a while now, but all we’ve seen thus far have been prototypes from companies like Samsung and Lenovo. Samsung has even been working on foldable AMOLED …

LG patent filing shows two different foldable phones

A patent filing made by LG to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) revealed not one, but two different concepts for a foldable phone than can be turned into a tablet and vice versa. The patent itself calls the product a “mobile phone with flexible display which can be folded in half.” One version appears to have two handset bodies side-by-side, with a single display that can be folded in half. When the display is folded, the device resembles a smartphone and shows an “always on” display with the time. Unfolded, it looks like a tablet.

Samsung brought 'almost finished' foldable Galaxy X to CES, 7.3" display in tow

Where there is smoke, there is probably fire, and we’ve been hearing about Samsung’s foldable phone in the last two days more than in the last two months. Turns out that Samsung has actually brought the phone, and showcased it to interested partners at the CES 2018 expo. Granted, Samsung has done this at the previous CES, too, but now the phone looked “almost finished,” tipped insiders, at least from a hardware standpoint, and ready for mass production in November.

Images from Samsung patent application allegedly show the foldable Samsung Galaxy X

Just the other day, we passed along some more information about the foldable Samsung Galaxy X. One report stated that the device will look like a phone at rest, and when unfolded, it becomes a tablet with a 7.3-inch screen. Yesterday, the President of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, DJ Koh, said that issues with the UX have forced Sammy to delay the launch of the Galaxy X to 2019.

Today, sketches of the Samsung Galaxy X have been released by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). They are from a filing made by Samsung back on June 14 of last year. The product has one …

ZTE will continue to experiment with foldable smartphones, refine the concept

Despite the fact that its first foldable smartphone, the Axon M wasn’t too well received by the press and consumers alike, ZTE announced that it will continue to experiment with this design. It’s true that ZTE’s vice president of marketing Jeff Yee has said that the Axon M received positive feedback from those who bought it via AT&T, but that’s simply because it’s “something new.”

Although most customers are used to pay less than $200 for a ZTE smartphone, the Chinese company will continue to enlarge its portfolio of foldable smartphones, which are likely to …

Samsung's foldable smartphone might include technology similar to Apple's 3D Touch

If Samsung manages to launch the long-rumored Galaxy X, the foldable smartphone might benefit from some technologies that have yet to make it in any of the company’s products. One of these technologies is already implemented by the competition and everyone knows them as 3D Touch (Apple) or Force Touch (Huawei).

To some degree, Samsung implemented the pressure-sensitive technology to the Galaxy S8/S8+, but it’s only present around the virtual home button. Last year, the South Korean giant filed for a patent that describes a technology similar to Apple’s 3D Touch and Huawei’s Force Touch, …

Foldable Microsoft device could be the mythical Surface Phone

Yesterday, we showed you images from the latest patent filing made by Microsoft related to a folding Surface tablet. Besides the big question about whether this product will eventually reach the mass market, another big question is whether this device will be designed to morph from a single-screened to double-screened tablet, or whether it will be a tablet that can turn into a phone.

The report yesterday indicated that the device will come with the ability to make and take calls. Today, a tweet from Windows tipster Walking Cat revealed a link to a list of apps in the Windows Store. These …
