iPhone with 6.5-inch OLED screen could debut this year, LG Display to start shipping panels for Apple in H2 2018

LG Display might not have produced a single OLED panel for Apple in 2017, but it looks like things are about to change this year. A new report from South Korea suggests that Apple is planning to diversify its OLED suppliers for the next iPhones.
Sources of The Investor state that LG Display is close to inking an OLED supply deal with Cupertino and is expected to start panel shipments in the second half of 2018. This information is unofficial, but the display maker did previously confirm that it was in talks with Tim Cook & Co. over a possible agreement.

Will display aspect ratio affect your buying decisions in 2018?

2017 brought us some pretty amazing phones and an entirely new form-factor and aspect ratio. Since manufacturers wanted to reduce all bezels — sides, top, and bottom — they introduced this new, elongated ratio (ranging from 18:9 to 19.5:9), making phone displays taller and more immersive. But then again, 16:9 is still pretty much the standard when it comes to online media, so it’s a bit awkward when watching letterboxed YouTube clips on your extra-wide phone screen.

So, some people like the new step, while others insist that 16:9 is good enough and there’s no need …

Samsung patents a rollable display with fingerprint sensor

Samsung is on a roll. The South Korean company has the most successful mobile display business, but that’s not enough for Samsung. Although 2018 should be the year of the “foldable smartphone,” it appears that Samsung has a few more surprises in store for us.

The company recently filed a patent for a rollable display that can be activated by fingerprint. Unlike LG’s rollable display that uses a very small rotating motor, Samsung’s features magnets that are positioned along the main body that houses the display.

The patent shows two types of metallic …

Meet ZTE's new smartphone with 18:9 display, the Blade V9

A sequel to the ZTE Blade V8 is already in the works and it looks like the Chinese handset maker will make it official at CES (Consumers Electronics Show) 2018 in about a week from now.

The Blade V9 is more of an entry-level smartphone that will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo right out of the box. Another selling point of ZTE’s upcoming budget-friendly handset could be the 5.7-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio.

But there’s more, as the Blade V9 comes with a dual-camera setup consisting of 16MP and 5MP cameras. Also, the smartphone includes a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a …

Alcatel 3C may be the cheapest smartphone with 18:9 display

Up until a few months ago, displays with 18:9 aspect ratio were reserved for high-end smartphones, but more recently we’ve noticed many companies including the new feature inside their mid-tier products.

Now, Chinese company TCL raises the standard for budget-friendly smartphones by adding 18:9 displays to at least one of its devices. Alcatel 3C is one of the many phones that TCL plans to introduce in the next few months and, judging by the specs list, an inexpensive one.

In fact, it looks like Alcatel 3C will sell in Europe for no more than €120 outright. …

Xiaomi to add iPhone X-like "full display gestures" to Mi MIX and Redmi 5 series phones

Xiaomi is testing new gesture controls for some of its smartphone models. The so-called “full display gestures” have been included in the latest beta build of MIUI 9, the company’s custom Android-based firmware.
Swiping up from the bottom of the display will get you to the home screen. Add a short pause to the same motion and you’ll activate the “Recents” screen. Lastly, swiping from the left or right of the screen to the middle will return you to a previous page.
It looks like Xiaomi has drawn inspiration …

How to bring the display of your Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL to life by forcing wide color gamut mode (no root)

One of the most common complaints about the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL’s displays, apart from the severe blue shift when viewing them at an angle, is the dull all-around appearance of colors. And this is a legit complaint—the colors do, indeed, look somewhat washed-out and muted—but this isn’t caused by the displays being technically incapable of offering more, or anything of the sort. In fact, with Oreo, Google is introducing the option to use different color spaces and gamuts – low, HDR, and wide. Only problem (currently) is, that an app has to specifically call for the …

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 rumored to carry a 7-inch display and a 5500mAh battery

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was released this past June, carrying a 6.4-inch display with a 1080 x 1920 FHD resolution, powered by the Snapdragon 625 SoC. That is a pretty big screen for a handset, but not close to the size of the display that is rumored to be featured on the Mi Max 3. If the latest rumor is right, the Mi Max 3 will be encroaching on tablet territory with a screen size of 7-inches. The aspect ratio will weigh in at 18:9, and the panel will sport thinner bezels than those seen on the first two models in this series. The early betting line has the 1080 x 2160 FHD+ resolution the favorite …

Report: OnePlus 6 to arrive in March with its fingerprint reader embedded under the display

The OnePlus 5T was released in November, and already there is talk about the OnePlus 6. A report published today out of China suggests that the next new build of the phone will be unveiled in the middle of March of next year, with a release at the end of the month. And it apparently will feature a fingerprint scanner embedded underneath the phone’s display. Samsung tried to get this technology up and running throughout 2017, but it was forced to place the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 fingerprint scanners on the rear of each model.

If the latest renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ …

Honor 9 Lite mid-range phone goes official with 18:9 display and Android Oreo

Honor 9 Lite was at the Chinese regulatory commission about a week ago, so today’s announcement might not be a total surprise for some of you who’ve read our previous report. However, we now have more information on the phone’s price and availability, in case you’re considering buying one.

As the title says, the Honor 9 Lite is one of the not so many mid-range Android smartphones that features an 18:9 aspect ratio display. The 5.65-inch screen with full HD+ resolution is probably one of the phone’s selling points.

Furthermore, Honor’s new handset comes with dual-camera setup, so you’ll …
