Samsung and LG to face competition for iPhone OLED panel supply, Sharp and Japan Display entering the race

Samsung’s display division may have been the sole OLED panel supplier for Apple in 2017, yet there are strong indications that things are about to change this year. Recently, it became clear that LG Display could be taking a piece of the iPhone pie in 2018, but if a new report is anything to go by, other manufacturers also harbor ambitions of providing panels for future Apple smartphones.

According to information from DigiTimes, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp will try to compete with Samsung and LG for Cupertino’s business. Foxconn-owned …

Apple is having a hard time with its competition on the vast Chinese market, latest IDC data reveals

Apple is slowly but steadily deciphering the mysteries of the saturated and rather competitive Chinese smartphone market as the latest quarterly data from IDC shows Cupertino growing 0.6% year over year and claiming some 7.7% of the market in Q3 2017. With 8.8 million iPhones sold for the time period, Apple is currently the 5th key player locally, trailing behind Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. One thing that could make a difference is the iPhone X, which is already being sold in China and will affect Cupertino’s next quarterly results.

Samsung unveils Bixby 2.0 as it tries to catch up with the competition

The second generation of Samsung’s virtual personal assistant Bixby was announced today during the manufacturer’s developer conference in San Francisco. Bixby will now “act as the control hub of your device ecosystem,” meaning that like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, the smart appliances found inside your smart home can be controlled with the latest version of Bixby.

To allow Bixby to be able to turn on and off items like a smart thermostat or a smart lamp, Samsung will release its new Bixby software development kit, making it available to developers starting today. The manufacturer …

Motorola Moto X4 size comparison versus the competition

So, there’s a new noteworthy mid-ranger on th block, and it’s the Moto X4.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the overall size and dimensions of the Moto X4. Standing at 5.84 x 2.89 x 0.31 inches (148.35 x 73.5 x 7.99 mm) and weighing at 5.75 oz (163 g), and having a screen-to-body ratio of 68.46%, the Moto X4 is not exactly a sleek handset, …

Siri is well ahead of assistant competition; AI “powerusers” are actually outside the demographic you'd expect

Voice assistants on our smartphones are still a bit of a niche — a lot of people out there either feel uncomfortable or unnatural when speaking to their phone, others don’t trust the speech recognition algorithms enough and prefer to just punch in whatever it is themselves. But, with companies working hard to improve their proprietary AI over the years, there are those users that have come to trust and rely on their voice assistants.

According to a study by Verto Analytics, 43.8% of smartphones in the USA have some sort of AI app, which has been used in May of 2017. The voice assistants …

HTC U 11 hands-on: putting the squeeze on its competition

Earlier this year, HTC said “out with the old, in with the new,” as the company stepped away from some of its established smartphone branding, and introduced the new U series with the U Play and U Ultra. Sleek and shiny, the glass-enclosed handsets resembled little of the metallic unibody look of One-series phones. While this new direction for HTC’s lineup was interesting, it also felt a bit lacking: in the U Play we had a new mid-ranger, and the U Ultra served to satisfy that phablet itch, but neither felt like a traditional flagship; would we ever get a proper follow-up …

Xperia XZs Motion Eye camera vs the competition: LG G6, Galaxy S7 edge, iPhone 7 Plus

Sony announced a few brand-new phones at MWC, with its heavy-hitters — the Xperia XZs and Xperia XZ Premium — sporting a fancily-branded new Motion Eye camera. It has an updated sensor, 5-axis stabilization, and an insane 960 FPS super slow-motion mode.

We took a few quick samples with the Xperia XZs, and you can check them out here. But then we came back with a bunch of phones on hand and shot some comparison snaps. Excuse the limited repertoire, but we just had the booth and its surroundings to work with. So, here’s a quick shootout between the Motion Eye camera …

Unique features of the LG G6 that set it apart from the current competition

LG finally lifted the veil on the G6 at MWC earlier today, and it sure was a sight to behold! The LG G6 has an amazingly compact footprint with almost bezel-less design, as a spacious 5.7-inch display occupies its front in a strikingly efficient manner. It boggles the mind how a device with almost the same dimensions as the 5.3-inch LG G5 can have such a big screen and remain adequately usable with one hand at the same time. But there’s more to the G6 than skin-deep beauty – the entire phone has been cleverly devised to utilize the new screen aspect ratio to its fullest, …
