The Clone Wars continue: Samsung phones were the most copied in 2017, according to benchmark stats

So, it’s a well-known fact that there are a number of nameless manufacturers over in China that make complete copies of well-known smartphones. Not your average “borrowing of ideas”, but an actual clone, usually with a weak hardware and super-cheap price to draw as much attention as it can.

Popular benchmark company AnTuTu has released an interesting statistic for 2017. It combed through all devices that held the AnTuTu tests from January through to December and concluded that 2.64% of all phones tested were clones or counterfeits.

Of these, the Galaxy S7 …

Would you ever buy a cheap clone of a popular smartphone?

There’s something truly fascinating about the shady realm of smartphone clone manufacturing. Whether it’s the sheer volume and diversity (there are actual tiers of quality and faithfulness in copying), the speed at which clones of popular flagships are released (sometimes before the original thing!), or just the way these are priced, there’s always something to ogle at, wondering whether you should press the “Buy it now” button.

Of course, when we say fascinating, we don’t necessarily mean you should ditch Samsung or Apple and go for No. 1 or GooPhone. The question is, when you factor in …

Samsung Galaxy S9 clone from China looks like what we expect from the real thing

We’ve been seeing and hearing so much about the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, that you would think that the device is about to be released. Using renders of the upcoming flagship model, a company in China has produced a knock-off of the Galaxy S9. Unlike the vertically mounted single-lens camera and fingerprint scanner that will be found on the rear of Galaxy S9, this clone features a dual-camera setup on back, similar to what we will reportedly find on the back of the Galaxy S9+.

The clone, made by Vkworld, carries the misleading model number of S9. It will be priced for less than what …

Amazon working on YouTube clone for Echo Show and Echo Spot to be called AmazonTube?

You might remember that back in late September, Google pulled YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show and its 7-inch display. Google was upset that Amazon had removed certain features from the version of YouTube that was being used with the smart speaker. Amazon took away the autoplay capability, which allows a viewer to sit and watch video after video after video without having to lift a finger. Amazon also disabled the ability of  Echo Show users to subscribe to a YouTube Channel. These channels are where you will find videos posted by a particular company, or individual.

Amazon apparently …

It is alive! Chinese iPhone 8 clone pops up on short video

Ah, the world of counterfeit phones — ain’t it grand? For the past few years, we’ve seen knockoffs of various hot and heavily-anticipated phones pop up here and there. The amusing thing is that some clones get “released” before the device they are copying is ever even announced. Of course, the iPhone 8 being… well — the iPhone 8 — knockoffs are guaranteed. And lo and behold, one has already been caught in the wild.

What follows below is an 8-second video, which shows us an iPhone clone running on Android (presumably). It looks quite close to what we expect the iPhone 8’s final design to …

This $12 clone of the Nokia 3310 looks almost convincing until you realize the terribleness of it

Smartphone clone artists never cease to amaze us. They can build a visually convincing replica of almost any upcoming phone just by looking at some blurry images. They can also re-build a $50 phone, the Nokia 3310, and sell it for $12. That’s what, two movie tickets? One expensive movie ticket? You get the point – it’s mighty cheap.

Such is the case with Indian manufacturer Darago, whose Nokia 3310 cover version almost looks like the real thing… until you put it by the original side and have a gander at the awful, awful display. Whereas the new Nokia 3310 has …
