Forget OnePlus 5T vs Galaxy S8 vs iPhone charging tests, how about a steak?

The OnePlus 5T Dash Charge feature is one of the best fast-charging options out there, pumping the Snapdragon 835-equipped phone full of electrons at lightning fast speeds. It couldn’t be otherwise, as the OnePlus, Oppo and Vivo brands are members of the same parent company, BBK, and we all know how fast Oppo’s VOOC charging system is, thanks to its 20W output, same as the Dash Charge, in fact.

That is why OnePlus is so adamant on advertising how quickly you can top up the 5T in any creative way imaginable. First, it was direct comparison with …

Apple buys wireless charging firm PowerbyProxi; Samsung profits on the transaction?

Apple, which has included support for wireless charging with the 2017 iPhone models for the first time ever, announced today that it is acquiring New Zealand based wireless charging firm PowerbyProxi. The latter designs wireless power products for consumers and the enterprise. Neither company would reveal the exact terms of the transaction. Apple has been slow to jump on the wireless charging bandwagon, but made sure this year that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X had glass backs. This is required because the wireless charging signal is not conducted by metal.

So why the interest …

All you need to know about wireless charging on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X

There’s this guy you might have heard of, Nikola Tesla. An inventor and scientist of legendary status, he established the fundamentals of modern-day supply of electricity, including the way power gets to your home right now. He also explored the potential of wireless energy transfer, dreaming of a world where power is available to all – wirelessly and at no cost. Alas, his ambitious idea did not materialize, but the principles behind Tesla’s wireless power distribution system are still in use a century later – in every smartphone that supports wireless charging, for instance.
And …

Would you rather get rid of glass backs, even if it costs wireless charging?

Over the past few years, wireless charging has been all the craze in the smartphone world. Most major manufacturers have steadily been moving towards making the feature a standard and are working on making it work faster.

But since the current version of wireless charging — that’s inductive charging — doesn’t work then the phone’s exterior is pure metal, manufacturers have turned to glass backs.

And glass looks nice, sure — it’s shiny, it’s cool to the touch, it just reeks of “premium”. But it’s also a magnet for fingerprint grease and feels particularly …
