LG's Software Update Center hopes to speed up Android updates

At its R&D campus in South Korea, LG has opened today the Software Upgrade Center which was built so that the manufacturer can start “providing customers worldwide with faster, timelier, smartphone operating system and software updates.” Android users have had to cope with a system that tries to deal with so many different manufacturers and models, that as of February (the last data available), Android 8.0 and 8.1 together could be found on just .11% of active Android handsets.

The first update to be handled by the Software Upgrade Center will result in Android Oreo being pushed out …

This Apple repair center sends 20 false emergency calls to 911 per day

Emergency 911 dispatchers in Elk Grove and Sacramento County in California have an odd case on their hands. Ever since October rolled in, they’ve been seeing on average of 20 false 911 calls every day, for a grand total of 1600 so far. As per one police dispatcher, Jamie Hudson:

We’ve been seeing these calls for the last four months from Apple. We’re able to see quickly where the call is coming from, so when we get one from Apple, the address will come up with their location.

The times when it’s greatly impacting us is when we have other emergencies happening and …

The iOS 11 Control Center disconnects Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but doesn't turn them off

Apple has approached the connectivity toggles in its shiny new Control Center overlay in iOS 11 a tad differently this time, it turns out. Security researchers are warning that instead of turning the Wi-fi or Bluetooth radios off completely when you tap on the respective switch in Control Center, it simply disconnects whatever gear is hooked up to use the respective wireless standard.

The radios themselves, however, will keep humming in the background in a low-power state. As per Apple, this is done to ensure that some features can be accessed immediately:

Results: do you like the new Control Center in iOS 11?

The Control Center of iOS is a little overlay, which an iPhone user will probably open about a dozen times per day, as it contains nifty buttons for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, quick shortcuts to Calculator and Flashlight, and sliders for display brightness and sound volume. It has been around for about 4 years, first introduced with iOS 7, and hasn’t changed much over time. The exception here is last year’s iOS 10, which made Control Center into a 2-page deal, separating system controls and shortcuts from the media player toggles.

In iOS 11, the overlay is getting a full — and we’d say much-needed …

Apple will return excess heat from new data center to the heating system of the local community

There is no doubt that Apple is one of the greenest tech companies in the world, and it’s aiming towards being as eco as possible. Its next step in that direction comes in the form of an interesting way to power one of its new data centers and deal with the excess heat it will produce.

The new facility will be built in the Jutland region of Denmark, and it will be powered only by renewable energy. A portion of this energy will come from recycled farm waste.

Apple is working with Aarhus University on a system to process agricultural waste products with a digester, which in turn generates …
