Black hole eats and destroys hapless star which wandered too close

Beware of the hungry black hole.

Astronomers tracked a supermassive black hole, 20 million times larger than the sun, which ate up and destroyed a star that came too close.

Located nearly 150 million light years away from Earth, scientists theorise the star swirled around the black hole, emitting intense x-rays and visible light, as a jet of material spat out at a quarter of the speed of light.

Such an occurrence, called a tidal disruption event (TDE), has been rarely spotted. But scientists think they happen more often. Read more…

New BlackBerry KEY2 render shows the phone in Black

The BlackBerry KEY2 will be introduced by BlackBerry Mobile this Thursday. Yesterday, we showed you a leaked render of the device that was a little different than previous images of the phone. The reason? The silver metallic casing that surrounded the phone and housed the physical QWERTY keyboard was not seen before, even in photographs of the device published by China’s TENAA regulatory agency.
We now know the reason for that. New renders of the KEY2 that tipster Evan Blass disseminated via tweet earlier today show the phone in Black. You might recall that in some …

Instagram opens up about the black box system it uses to place posts on a user's feed

Back in 2016, Instagram decided to change what a subscriber would see on his feed. At the time, the most recently sent posts were on top and as the user scrolled down, the posts got older and older. But Instagram decided to start using algorithms to decide which posts a subscriber would probably want to see first. At the time, Instagram said that it was doing this because the typical user was missing 70% of the posts in his feed.
Some Instagram users are unhappy with the current system, with some posters complaining that the algorithms bury their posts. This results …

Meet BllocZero18, the simplistic phone that celebrates minimalism in black and white

Unsurprisingly, smartphones in their current form are an extremely distracting piece of technology. Everything from the hardware down to the interface, the features, and all the catchy, vibrant colors of the apps are designed with the sole purpose of getting your sole undivided attention. And that’s a bit of a problem as it fuels a dangerous addiction.

Over the years, several startups and manufacturers have tried cracking down the code laying behind the simplistic approach at mobile technology. Devices like the Light Phone, Smartisan 2, and jokes like the noPhone are …

Which OnePlus 6 version should I buy? Mirror Black vs Midnight Black vs Silk White comparison

With lots of fanfare, OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 6 the other day, its 5th-gen flagship device that wants continues to challenge the established order and offer top-of-the-line specs at a rather stomachable price tag.

Joining the fray with its efficient 19:9 display aspect ratio, bezel-busting design, and thin frame, the device looks every bit modern, just like the majority of contemporary mid-range and flagship phones that aim to maximize the precious screen real estate, even at the stake of getting a controversial display notch up front.

That’s probably enough …

Galaxy S8 Lite press renders reveal Burgundy Red & Black variants

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 Lite has been revealed in new press renders. After leaking just a few days ago through FCC and TENAA listings, new press images shared via Weibo confirm the leaked smartphone’s design and also reveal two launch color variants.

As can be seen in the images, the design remains nearly identical to that of the regular Galaxy S8. This means an Infinity display with curved edges will adorn the front glass panel, while the rear will continue with the glass build. Also, sandwiched between the panels is an aluminum frame, which once again features a dedicated Bixby button. …

Say goodbye to Sprint as the yellow and black gets replaced by magenta

With the news today that T-Mobile plans on merging with Sprint in a transaction valued at $26.5 billion, this could be the end of the road for the Sprint name. The merged company will be known as T-Mobile and will be run at the top by the latter’s John Legere. T-Mobile parent Deutsche Bank will own 42% of the carrier, and Sprint parent SoftBank will control 27%. The public will own the remaining 31%. The deal, which still requires regulatory approval, will reduce the number of major U.S. wireless operators by 25%.

The history of Sprint is a long one, dating back to the Brown Telephone Company …
