Sony revealed a bunch of new wireless Bluetooth earbuds at CES 2018 just the other day, with a couple of these coming with built-in support for the Google Assistant, namely the WF-SP700N and WI-SP600N earbuds. Well, at least the support is there, but the actual Google Assistant will arrive at a later date with an software update.
2018 is shaping up as a strong year for smart home speakers and AI-driven experiences as a whole. Alongside the big announcement that companies such as LG, Lenovo, JBL, and Sony, among others, will start producing Google Assistant-powered smart speakers with touchscreens, Google also revealed that its AI assistant will finally be making its way to Android Auto, starting this week in the U.S.

What a year 2017 was for Amazon’s virtual personal assistant Alexa. The success of Alexa this year went hand-in-hand with the success of the smart speaker category in general, and the Amazon Echo line specifically. Google’s keeping up with the holiday spirit, introducing Easter on… Christmas, as you only need to wish the Assistant on your phone, or your Home smart speaker with Google’s chatbot buddy on board “Merry Christmas,” and those eggs will start spilling out.
Google announced today that Google Assistant will now be found on Android tablets for the first time. Slates running Android Nougat (7.0) and Android Marshmallow (6.0) will receive an update allowing users to access the feature. In addition, Android powered handsets running Android Lollipop (5.0) will be the recipient of an update that will add the virtual assistant. With Google Assistant, you can set timers and alarms, create lists that will appear on both your phone and tablet, get the latest weather, news, sports scores, stock prices, turn on or off smart appliances, and much more.
Android Go is not the only important thing announced by Google earlier today. An important improvement with the potential to impact a much larger pool of mobile phone users only briefly mentioned by Google.
Apparently, Google Assistant will be customized to work on feature phones. To show it’s serious about it, Google announced that it’s bringing its Assistant to a feature phone that’s only available in India, the Reliance JioPhone.
