Fllike wants to be the Yelp of airlines

Flying used to be a glamorous endeavor. In the 1970’s, even those flying coach could enjoy legroom and a half-decent meal. But then airlines started cutting back. As fuel prices rose, amenities began to vanish. Now, flying sucks. Not even a free prostate exam (thanks TSA!) makes up for flying Spirit.

One person who knows this especially well (flying, not complimentary TSA prostate exams) is Chris Holmes, founder and CEO of Fllike. This iPhone app lets you review your flight from your iPhone in just a matter of seconds, sharing it with other users of the app.

Holmes believes that as more people use it, it’ll build a picture of quality across the airlines, allowing consumers to make more informed decisions about who they fly with. Holmes believes that “eventually Fllike will offer a great picture of airline performance regardless of price.”

The app lets you give each element of your flight a score ranging from one to ten. Once you’ve keyed in your flight number or scanned your boarding pass, you can rate the seats, the crew, the timeliness, the food, and even the quality of the aircraft by swiping on a slider.

This desire to make the flying experience more bearable comes from a personal place. “I work for a soap company. My role is in business development. This means that I take around 50 flights every year,” he explained.

“This is all about customer experience, and providing a platform for people to share that in a simple and beautifully designed way.”

Fllike lands at a time when the fight rating market is heating up. There are incumbents like Skytrax, of course, who are the industry leaders. And two weeks ago, one of the most popular travel apps, Tripit, introduced a feature that lets passengers review the flights they take.

But there are some key differences.

Fllike is a damn sight better looking than Tripit. And in the coming months, it will allow users to book flights straight from the app.

“You’ll be able to see each airline’s score before you book. What better than flying an airline your trusted friends have already rated?”

You can download from Fllike from the iOS App Store. An Android version is expected to land early next year.

Busker app brings shopping to live video streaming

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are all luring video creators with product enhancements and big budgets — as well as by touting their massive scale and influence.

Just last week, Facebook released Apple TV and Chromecast support for live video. Twitter opened up Periscope to cameras other than smartphones. Google bought FameBit to offer more brand sponsorships.

But younger startups aren’t fearful of competing with the three tech giants. Live-streaming apps like Busker and Live.me think they have a way in — ecommerce.

Both Busker and Live.me last week introduced shopping experiences in their apps. While watching participating broadcasters, a viewer is two clicks away from purchasing physical or virtual items.

These apps are betting that commerce can be the feature that will differentiate their platforms from bigger competitors and attract up-and-coming musicians and comedians who will find an audience.

“We thought it was important and unique for the broadcaster. We heard them say, ‘I’m not here to beg for money, but hey, I need to make a living,'” Tamir Buchler, chief operating officer of Busker, told Mashable

For example, Fabian Zayas-Luciano (aka therealFABE) is a freestyle rapper who will share originals and also rap viewers’ comments. During his broadcasts on Busker, viewers can buy downloads of his songs and accessories like stickers and a special “Hat of the Day,” for which he charges up to $60.

Zayas-Luciano will simultaneously broadcast on Twitter’s Periscope. But there, he and other creators are unable to directly earn cash or sell goods within the app. He does use Periscope and Facebook Live to direct new viewers to Busker.

Some Periscope broadcasters will link to their PayPal address or a GoFundMe account on their streams. The “friction” and “awkwardness” in that process, Buchler said, was one way his team lured Periscope broadcasters to come over to Busker.

In addition to selling items, viewers can pay creators cash in $1, $3, $5, $10 and $20 increments on Busker.

The in-app payment feature is also available on live-streaming platforms YouNow and Kamcord. To compete, Busker is looking to attract an older demographic and offer 85 percent of the revenue to creators.

“I wanted to use Busker because of the opportunity to be rewarded for my livestreams,” Zayas-Luciano said.

Busker’s commerce features are powered by Stripe, a payments processor that handles billions of dollars per year in transactions.

“Whether they’re drivers, couriers, caregivers or now buskers, millions of people are using marketplace platforms powered by Stripe to make part-time wages or earn a full-time living in ways that would’ve been nearly impossible a decade ago,” Raylene Yung, head of product engineering at Stripe, told Mashable.

For Busker, the marketplace is phase one of its commerce business. In the coming months, the company plans to partner with brands and retailers to offer products for promotion.

Busker’s founding team does have a leg-up for offering shopping experience. Buchler worked at comparison shopping site PriceGrabber.com as the director of strategic business development for 10 years.

“This isn’t QVC,” Buchler said. “But we want to furnish the app and give broadcasters the ability to do as much as they can, to make money.”

HemaApp gives smartphones the power to detect anemia

A team of researchers from the University of Washington have developed an app that turns smartphones into anemia detectors. See, the condition often goes undiagnosed in developing parts of the world. And seeing as it’s the most common blood disorder out there, it likely affects more than 25 percent of the population that the World Health Organization believes it does. HemaApp gives medical professionals a way to see if patients have anemia simply by shining the phone’s flash against their skin.

The app estimates hemoglobin concentrations — anemia is characterized by low levels of hemoglobin or red blood cells — by analyzing the color of a person’s blood. UW’s researchers found that it was most accurate when used with a low-cost LED lighting attachment on top of the flash, allowing it to see more of what’s under the patient’s skin. In fact, it was as accurate as the Masimo Pronto, the expensive FDA-approved machine that can measure hemoglobin non-invasively using a device clipped to a person’s finger. A smartphone loaded with the HemaApp will be much cheaper and accessible for medical professionals in developing nations.

This team of researchers built on the work by another U of Washington group that developed an app that can detect jaundice in babies. They plan to improve their technology further to be able to screen for sickle cell disease and other blood disorders. Despite what it can do, HemaApp will mostly be used for initial screening, and people who exhibit low hemoglobin levels still have to get a blood test. It will at least allow doctors and nurses to pluck those who need further tests from a bigger number of people, though, so they won’t have to take blood samples for anemia if they don’t have to.

Adblock Plus Browser officially lands on Android and iOS

While Apple’s been working on system-level ad blocking for iOS 9, Eyeo, the creator of Adblock Plus has been building its own browser.

Available today for both iOS and Android, Adblock Plus’ browser is free. It’s not actually entirely built in-house, instead based on top of an extensible iOS browser called Kitt which made it easy to port the Chrome extension from desktop.

The company is loudly trumpeting that it has “beaten” Apple to releasing its content blocking tools, but it’s unlikely Adblock Plus will be as efficient as Apple’s upcoming tools.

Adblock Plus blocks advertising as its loaded by the browser using JavaScript, unlike iOS 9’s content blockers which can block it before it’s loaded at all at a system level, which offers further performance improvements.

We’ve published extensive data on how efficient iOS 9’s content blocking is in practice, sometimes saving over 50 percent in page load time alone.

On the Android side, the browser has been in beta since late May and saw 300,000 downloads in the first week. Adblock Plus was previously banned from the Play Store for “interfering with” other services, but has managed to successfully re-list the app on the store.

If you’re dying to block advertising on your phone, you can download Adblock Plus now, though you’ll need to switch your browser to take advantage of it.
