Sony Xperia XZ1 launches in the US as the first phone to run Android Oreo out of the box

Announced a few weeks back alongside the Xperia XZ1 Compact
and Xperia XA1 Plus, the Sony Xperia XZ1 is now available to buy in the US,
becoming the first among the three new Xperias to be released stateside.

Priced at $699.99 unlocked, the Xperia XZ1 succeeds the
Xperia XZs and Xperia XZ, offering a largely similar design, but improved
features. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about the XZ1 is that it’s the world’s
first commercially available smartphone to run Android 8 Oreo out of the box. This means it’s got all
the latest software enhancements from Google, including adaptive …

Motorola reversal: Moto G4 Plus to get updated to Android 8.0

Owners of the Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play couldn’t believe their eyes last week when they went through the list of handsets that Motorola will update to Android 8.0. Despite being less than 18-months old, the three handsets were not scheduled to receive an update to the new Android build. And to make matters worse, a promotional listing for the Moto G4 Plus was edited to remove a previous comment about the model receiving Android O. Similar revisions were made to the Moto G4’s listing on Amazon India.

Today, a statement made by Motorola revealed that the comments made in the Moto …

AT&T launches Threat Defender, an Android app that's not meant to protect your smartphone

File this under “carriers do wacky things” to please customers. The “culprit” in this case? AT&T, which has just launched an Android app called Threat Defender. Even the most non-tech savvy consumers would probably think that the new app launched by the US carrier is meant to protect their smartphones.

Alas, AT&T Threat Defender is purely an entertainment app that’s only good to “protect” you from boredom for a little while. If you haven’t guessed it yet, Threat Defender is an interactive game that’s available to everyone who owns a device running Android 2.3 and up.

It’s …

Malware found in wallpaper apps infects 21 million Android devices via Google Play

The second largest outbreak to hit the Google Play Store that we know of is called ExpensiveWall, a new malware discovered in wallpaper apps, which is said to be responsible for the infection of 21.1 million Android devices.

Check Point’s researchers discovered the malware early last month and issued a statement that contains all their findings related to ExpensiveWall.

Unfortunately, the malware infected at least 50 apps on Google Play, which were downloaded between 1 million and 4.2 million times before they were removed.

The ExpensiveWall malware was “packed” inside wallpaper …

Android handsets failed at twice the rate of iPhone units during Q2 2017

The latest State of Mobile Device Performance and Health report was just issued by Blancco Technology Group and it revealed that during the second quarter, one out of every four Android devices failed worldwide. That was more than double the 12% of iPhone models that failed globally during the same three month period. In North America, the gap was even wider with 24% of Android phones going down vs just 8% of iPhone handsets. Strangely, in Asia the numbers were reversed with 60% of iPhones failing versus 28% of Android flavored handsets.

From April through June, Samsung handsets accounted …

Google will delete your Android backups after 2 months of inactivity without any warning

Turns out Google will get rid of your old Android backups after two months of inactivity if you don’t actively use an Android device. This important tidbit of info was brought to our attention by Reddit user Tanglebrook, who learned this in the worst possible way – by having all of their Android settings, saved Wi-Fi passwords, and app data deleted after using an old iPhone of theirs for a while.

And that’s quite normal – Google’s own terms of service explicitly say that after 14 days of inactivity, your existing Android backups will get an expiration date, after which they go …

Essential Phone confirmed to receive Android 8.0 Oreo “in the next month or two”

The Essential Phone has only been
recently launched on the market, so it makes perfect sense that the
handset ships with Android Nougat on board. However, Andy Rubin’s
company plans to offer customers who purchased the Essential Phone
the option to upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo.

During a Reddit AMA scheduled earlier
today, Andy Rubin and other Essential officials answered some of the
questions posted by users. Concerning the Android Oreo update,
Rebecca Zavin, Essential’s VP of Software confirmed that it will be
released “in the next month or two.”
