Best Android tablets of 2018

The Android tablet market is flooded, quite literally, with offerings from mostly unknown brands and manufacturers. Some of them can actually be a solid buy in their own right, but finding just the right one could be a hassle, seeing as how most of them come from China. Some of the big names are still releasing Android-powered, albeit not as frequently as before, when the world was crazy about tablets.
Still, if you’re looking for a really solid Android tablet—be it for multimedia, artistic endeavors, or even work; cheap, expensive, or somewhere in-between—there’s …

Android 8.1 Oreo beta starts rolling out to the Essential Phone

Essential has just announced that Android 8.1 Oreo is now available for the Essential Phone in the beta form. The US company confirmed last month that it will update the flagship directly to Android 8.1 Oreo, thus skipping Android 8.0.

The first beta build of Android 8.l Oreo is being pushed OTA (over the air) to those who’ve been using beta builds of Android 8.0. Otherwise, you’ll have to download the file from Essential’s website and flash it manually on your smartphone.

We also have a complete changelog that contains all the new stuff added by Essential, such as smart text selection, …

Privacy matters: Android P might alert you if a phone call is being recorded

Android 9.0 P is likely just around the corner as an early developer beta and possible features of the upcoming build are slowly trickling out. Just yesterday, we informed you about a slew of plausible features that involved display notch support, visual improvements to make the OS more appealing to iOS users, as well as making Android future-proof and capable of correctly working on unorthodox devices like the dual-screen ZTE Axon M and the oft-rumored foldable Galaxy X. Battery improvements are also mentioned.

Today, a somewhat minor but undoubtedly noteworthy feature …

The results immortalized: Android One wins popularity contest vs MIUI

As you may have learned, Xiaomi — the Chinese smartphone giant that also happens to have an Android One partnership for that one phone (Xiaomi Mi A1) — recently ran a Twitter poll. It was comparing its own, home-made MIUI interface, which heavily customizes Android, to the vanilla experience on Android One. Turns out, Android One won the poll votes and Xiaomi deleted the tweet.

No hard feelings here, but we thought it would be fun to immortalize those results, so we ran our own poll yesterday. As expected, most of our readers are much more fond of Google’s pure Android experience than an …

Android P features leak, notch support incoming

Despite the fact the latest major Android version – Android 8 Oreo – is present on little more than 1% of all Android devices, we’ve already got some details on the next big Android update – Android 9.0 P, having the internal code name ‘Pistachio Ice Cream’.

According to insider sources, Google has already laid out the main goals of Android 9.0 P. One of them is said to be a visual overhaul of the OS to make the software more appealing. Reportedly, Google is aiming to draw the attention of iOS users with this move, hoping to make them switch over to Android. As part of the …

Let's finish that poll: Android One or Xiaomi MIUI 9? Vote here

You may have heard of Xiaomi — the China-based tech company that grew to prominence with its bargain-priced, flagship-grade phones. A lot of them are sold internationally through 3rd party retailers, so you may even be one of the few people that bit the bullet and bought one of these bargains.

Xiaomi is known for another thing besides its affordable phones, though — its super-heavy Android re-skin. Dubbed MIUI, it’s Xiaomi’s own interface that makes the operating system look in a whole different way.

This is why the release of the Xiaomi Mi A1 was such a big deal — the phone is built …

Microsoft Launcher for Android now includes Cortana integration

The Microsoft Launcher for Android has received an update that adds Cortana integration to version 4.6 of the app. The update also allows you to add the Daily Bing Wallpaper to your home screen or lock screen, or both. The Microsoft Launcher allows you to change the wallpaper on your phone, or use theme colors or icon packs. Take a picture on your phone and it will show up on your Windows PC. With the app, you can set up a …

Xiaomi removes all traces of Twitter poll that had Android One topping MIUI

Last September, the Xiaomi Mi A1 was launched. This is an Android One handset which means that it did not come with Xiaomi’s own MIUI skin. The latter has been criticized by Xiaomi’s own fans and users of the company’s handsets. But now that Xiaomi has released an Android One phone, the company felt that it might be a good time to poll consumers to see which UI they prefer.

Now, looking at this from Xiaomi’s point of view, the company is not going to run such a poll on Twitter unless it is pretty sure that the results are going to be in its favor. Based on an image that was posted on a sub-reddit …

Microsoft patent application could lead to a smaller notch for future iOS and Android handsets

Microsoft has applied for a patent application that could result in a smaller notch on future versions of the Apple iPhone X. The technology that the patent application covers would combine the front-facing camera and infra-red camera into one sensor. There are other advantages to doing this besides saving space. The technology in the patent would allow infra-red sensors to be placed in a camera alongside visible light sensors. This would allow the phone to collect infra-red data and visible light data at the same time, without parallax issues disrupting depth calculations.

The patent, named …
