Verizon crushes analysts' expections with 1.17 million net retail postpaid additions during Q4 2017

This morning, Verizon released its quarterly earnings report for the last three months of 2017. Analysts expected the nation’s largest carrier to report 685,000 net new postpaid subscribers. Big Red blew right past that forecast by adding 1.17 million net new postpaid customers for the period that covered October through December. This nearly doubled last year’s number, and was the most net new postpaid customers added by Verizon since the first quarter of 2016. The number of postpaid net new smartphone additions was 647,000, up 42% year-over-year.

Former Verizon subscribers made up the largest percentage of its rivals recent customer additions

During the second quarter of this year, Verizon made the biggest contribution to its rival carriers in the form of recently added customers. Based on data from Cowen and Company Equity Research, more customers from Verizon left to switch to another operator than any other U.S. based wireless carrier. Cowen says that this indicates a more competitive market in the wireless industry. It also suggests that consumers aren’t willing anymore to shell out more money for a premium wireless experience now that the difference between carriers is fading.

Hearthstone: Journey to Un'goro is here, and it comes with plenty of additions

Hearthstone is the most popular digital card game by a wide margin, and Blizzard is doing its best to keep it that way. Since its release in 2014, it has already seen five expansions, counting Journey to Un’goro that was launched today.

The new expansion brings 135 new cards, adding a variety of dinosaurs and elementals, among other things. Additionally, the expansion comes with some new mechanics – adaptations and in-game quests. Jefferies lowers its estimates of Q4 postpaid net additions for Verizon, AT&T and Sprint

Wall Street securities house Jefferies has cut its fourth quarter postpaid net addition estimates for three of the largest carriers in the U.S. For example, Jefferies analysts now expect Big Red to have added 786,000 new postpaid customers in the three month period that ended last month. Previously, the trading house was expecting Verizon to add 943,000 postpaid subscribers in Q4. Postpaid churn is estimated to be 1.03% for the period, unchanged from the earlier forecast.
