Nokia 8 will soon get Android 8.1 Oreo, beta update now available for download

In a surprising move, HMD Global announced that its flagship, Nokia 8 will be updated to Android 8.1 Oreo very soon. For the time being, owners of the smartphone can download the first Android 8.1 Oreo beta build released by HMD and send their feedback to help make the update bug-free.

Those who want to try Android 8.1 Oreo before the Finnish company releases the stable version can join the Beta Labs Program, which does not seem to have a limited number of spots. HMD Global’s Chief Product Offices, Juho Sarvikas, confirmed Android 8.1 Oreo beta will bring a host of new features to the Nokia …

Apple HomePod is finally arriving: 8 speakers, spatial awareness, super-easy pairing, priced better than the Google Home Max!

It was almost a year ago, at Apple’s WWDC 2017 event, when we first heard official word about the Apple HomePod. Basically, a smart speaker, much like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. After some silence, however, it turned out the HomePod was intentionally delayed since Apple believed it’s “not ready yet”.

Well, the wait is over: the Apple HomePod will officially start shipping on the 9th of February, while pre-orders open this Friday, the 26th of January.

What is the HomePod?

It’s a 7-inch-tall cylinder covered with a stylish-looking, …

Face unlock: who does it best? iPhone X vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 5T

Unlocking your phone with your face has been a thing for quite some time. It has been a part of Android since 2011, when Face Unlock was introduced on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. (Remember that guy?) Alas, the feature was neither secure, nor very reliable, which is probably why it never reached the mainstream popularity that fingerprint scanners achieved over the years that followed.

Yet face unlocking is now gaining traction – not only because the technology has evolved, but also because fingerprint scanners in general are getting less convenient. Growing screens and shrinking bezels …

Acer Iconia One 8 (2018) specs leaked ahead of official unveiling

Acer never misses an MWC (Mobile World Congress) trade fair and we believe this year will be no exception. Every year, the company unveils a new wave of Android tablets, the so-called Iconia series.

One of the tablets that might be unveiled at MWC 2018 in late February is the Acer Iconia One 8 (2018), which has just appeared at FCC (Federal Communications Commission). As the name suggests, the slate will feature an 8-inch display with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution.

As far as the rest of the specs go, Acer Iconia One 8 (2018) is definitely a budget-friendly tablet. For example, Acer’s …

The iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus sold harder in Q4 than their predecessors

We just had a research firm show a historically low level of interest in Apple’s newest iPhones at AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint, and now a consumer study comes to reiterate that fact, again for the US. The iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X have reportedly represented 61% of all iPhone sales in America last quarter, which is much lower than the 72% that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus commanded before them.

Granted, the iPhone X was quite late to the party, but it seems that people were waiting for it, instead of grabbing the other two, more legacy-oriented iPhones, which resulted …

Honor 8 update adds 3D panorama mode, lots of new features

Despite the fact that Honor 8 will not be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo, the smartphone keeps getting new features and improvements. It’s true that the Chinese company may change its mind and decide, by popular demand, that the Honor 8 is worth of a major software upgrade, but until then, let’s see what the newest update brings into the mix.

First off, there’s a new 3D panorama mode that will allow Honor 8 owners to shot 3D dynamic images. The new mode can be accessed via the Camera app, so you’ll have no issues in triggering it whenever you want.

Another important addition to the Honor …

Mystery ZTE phone gets certified by Wi-Fi Alliance with Android 8.1 installed; is it the Axon 8?

ZTE is not a brand that dominates the conversation around the dinner table in the states, although its profile might have received a little boost with the release of the ZTE Axon M. The dual-screened folding phone (yeah, we said it) may not offer the form factor that the Samsung Galaxy X will, but these are still early days for this category. We digress. What we want to discuss now is a new mystery model from ZTE that was just certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Carrying the model number Z2321U, the Wi-Fi Alliance lists the device as an LTE/CDMA Multi-Mode Digital Mobile Phone. More interesting …

Samsung wants you to spend less time on your Galaxy Note 8, says this Thrive app can help

Starting with the premise that “your phone is useful, but sometimes you need to put it down,” Samsung this week introduced a new free app for its Galaxy Note 8 smartphone. Called Thrive, the app allows you to block all notifications (including calls, texts, and anything that’s app-related) for customizable periods of time, whenever you need to just disconnect from your handset. The Thrive app features auto replies, letting those who call or text you know that you’re taking a break from your phone. If you want, you can make a VIP list with people who are allowed to reach you at any time. There’s …
