Thanks to a number of lawsuits filed by Apple against Qualcomm and vice versa, there is a good chance that Qualcomm will not be supplying CDMA iPhone units with a modem chip next year. That could be a role that MediaTek will play in 2018, with Intel supplying Apple with the component for GSM models.

A research firm called GBH Insights said today that the Apple iPhone was the top selling tech product of 2017. In fact, with 233 million units expected to be rung up for the entire year, the device sold more than the numbers 2 through 5 products added together. The finicky cryptocurrency has skyrocketed in overall value throughout 2017, but its bumpy December continued in the run-up to Christmas. After posting an all-time high of $19,796 per bitcoin on Dec. 17, the price fell to $11,590 on Dec. 22, according to Coinbase data).

It was the steepest decline of the year, losing more than 40 percent of its peak value to date — a milestone reached just days earlier. The price has been creeping back up since then, and it continues to hover at around $14,000 as of Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Read more…

We didn’t ask for a lot of the overarching trends that phone makers forced on us in 2017, then jacked up the average selling prices, but they are here nonetheless, so we asked last week what’s your favorite of the tendencies emerged this year, like better screen-to-body ratios, or HDR displays.
