You future smartphone could be ridiculously fast even without 5G.

That’s the promise of Qualcomm’s latest LTE chip: the Snapdragon X24, which the company says is capable of hitting blazing-fast download speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second.

Now, as we’ve noted before, the company’s touted top speed is more of a best case scenario, rather than a guarantee. There are many other factors that determine network speeds other than the modem.

Even so, there’s a good reason to be at least cautiously optimistic about Qualcomm’s latest milestone: it’s a very good sign for the future of 5G. Read more…

Google rewards loyal Nexus owners with 20% off the purchase of a new Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL

If you’re relatively new to the world of smartphones, you might not remember the Nexus line of handsets that were offered by Google starting back in 2010. Built by different manufacturers (HTC, LG, Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei), the Nexus line’s claim to fame was the stock Android OS installed. As a result, these models were always among the first to be updated to the latest Android build.

In 2016, Google didn’t release a new Nexus model, and instead offered the HTC built Pixel and Pixel XL. Last year, the HTC built Pixel 2 and the LG produced Pixel 2 XL were released and are currently …

Blast from the past: Verizon rolls out Android 7.0 Nougat for Motorola DROID MAXX 2

The DROID MAXX 2 is a rather old smartphone having been introduced in the US in late 2015. At the time Verizon launched the device, it was running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but the carrier updated the DROID MAXX 2 to Marshmallow back in 2016.

Although it hasn’t been three full years since the DROID MAXX 2 made its debut on the market, we’re kind of surprised to see that Verizon and Motorola are still supporting the smartphone. Today, Big Red confirmed the handset launched in October 2015 is now getting an Android 7.0 Nougat update.

Along with Nougat, Motorola included the December security …

iOS 11.3 Beta 2 finally adds the iPhone battery health sub-menu

After another iPhone scandal late last year, Apple admitted it hasn’t been transparent enough about how it handles power management on aging iPhones. Long story short — iPhones with batteries that have degraded beyond a certain level get their performance throttled in order to prevent the weak batteries to cause random restarts. However, the user was never informed properly of what is going on and why their iPhone has suddenly slowed down in performance and responsiveness.

To redeem itself for this lack of communication, Apple lowered the price for replacing an iPhone battery down to $29 …
