Instagram Stories has more than 150 million daily users, new update introduces ads

Since its launch back in August, Instagram Stories has grown considerably, as Instagram announced the application has now more than 150 million daily users. That many users in just five months is a great achievement, one that will most likely become even great in the coming months.

Along with the announcement that Instagram Stories has more than 150 million daily users, the company also confirmed a couple of new features that will be available in the coming weeks.

For example, the Instagram Business Tools will offer users insights on stories. Businesses converted to a business profile will be able to see the reach, impressions, replies and exits for each individual story within Business Tools.

Another new feature introduced in Instagram Stories is ads. The new Story ads will be rolled out globally over the coming weeks, but they will be tested with a group of 30 partners such as Capital One, General Motors, Maybelline New York, Quantas, Nike, and Netflix.

These ads will consist of a photo lasting up to 5 seconds or a video of up to 15 seconds. The good news is they are skippable, so Instagram users can either watch these ads to completion before heading to the next story, or they can swipe to skip it.

It’s unclear how bad the deployment of ads in Instagram Stories will impact the app’s accelerated growth since its launch, but it will certainly reach the next milestone a bit slower now.

Best of CES 2017 This Year’s Most Interesting Gadgets

Best of CES 2017 This Year’s Most Interesting Gadgets

AFTER WALKING MILES of expo hall carpeting, watching countless live demos, and sitting through god knows how many press announcements, we’re ready to declare these ten products to be the best things we saw at CES 2017.

Of all the amazing and beautiful gadgets on display here in Las Vegas, these are the products which exhibit the strong sense of innovation and vision within their categories. They achieve this through exquisite industrial design, innovative engineering, and simply seeing the future and realizing it in a product you can touch and hold.

Amazon Fire TV is now built into 4K sets

You won’t have to buy a separate Fire TV device just to use Amazon’s full services on your TV.

Seiki, Westinghouse and Element Electronics are launching a series of 4K sets with Fire TV technology built-in. They all include Amazon’s current interface, including a wide range of Alexa voice commands thanks to a microphone-equipped remote. If you use an over-the-air TV antenna, you’ll have access to both a channel guide and favorite individual channels on the home screen.

None of the companies are ready to talk pricing or exact ship dates (you’ll only get them sometime “later this year”). However, there will be 43-, 50-, 55- and 65-inch models. And given that these brands (usually) focus on lower-cost TVs, there’s a good chance that you won’t have to pay a premium for native Amazon features.

The question is whether or not you’ll see any other major TV makers follow suit. Heavyweights like Samsung, LG and Sony already have highly developed smart TV platforms (whether in-house or Android TV), and it’s doubtful they’ll ditch their existing strategies just to say they have Fire TV support.

Kuri home robot can read to your kids and watch your home

You may not have to wait for the likes of ASUS’ Zenbo to cross the ocean before you can get an affordable home robot.

Mayfield Robotics (one of Bosch’s startups) has taken the wraps off of Kuri, a 20-inch-tall robot companion that promises to play nicely with your smart home. It can answer questions with a human-like touch (facial expressions, head gestures and sounds), watch over your home with a 1080p camera and play audio, whether it follows you around with music or reads to your kids. It’s reportedly easy to program, and you can use IFTTT to have it talk to other smart household devices.

The bot can recognize individual people, and putts around much like a robotic vacuum: it can avoid objects and stairs, and it’ll return to its charging dock when its “hours” of battery life run out. It’ll be a while before Kuri ships, unfortunately, as Mayfield plans a launch sometime in the holiday season.

You can pre-order the robot today with a $100 deposit, though, and the $699 price is just low enough that it might be justifiable if you want a robotic helper that can follow you around.

Intel unveils its 7th-gen CPUs for desktops and performance laptops

Intel hasn’t forgotten about desktop aficionados. Only a few months after debuting its seventh-generation CPUs for ultraportables, the chip giant is rounding things out with new processors for more powerful machines. There’s the “H-series,” targeted at “performance laptops and mobile workstations,” and the “S-series,” which are meant for more traditional desktops. They’ll complement the two other lines of seventh-generation CPUs, which cover ultra-thin designs (the “Y-series”) and faster ultraportables (the “U-series”).

Naturally, you can expect the new desktop chips to perform better than their predecessors. Intel claims the S-series i7-7700K CPU is 25 percent faster than the i7-4770K (which, it’s worth noting, is three generations older). There’s likely a much smaller performance gap when comparing it to Intel’s fifth and sixth-generation CPUs. The company also claims the i7-7700K can “create, share and stitch” 4K 360-degree videos 35 percent faster than the 4770K. That’s a particularly niche use case to call out right now, but it might become more important as 360-degree video takes off.

When it comes to the H-series chips, Intel says they’ll perform about 20 percent faster than a comparable fourth-gen chip (the i7-4700HQ) and handle 4K 360-degree videos 65 percent faster. You’ll see the H-series in bulkier gaming and desktop-replacement laptops, and it sounds like they’ll pair pretty well with modern mobile GPUs like NVIDIA’s 10-series and AMD’s Polaris lineup (which recently made an appearance in Dell’s latest Alienware laptops).

The highest-end S-series CPU, the $339 i7-7700K, will feature a base clock speed of 4.2GHz with boost speeds up to 4.5GHz. In comparison, the 6700K was clocked between 4GHz and 4.2GHz. The new chip still packs in four cores and eight threads (thanks to Hyperthreading) and it includes Intel HD 630 graphics.

For the first time, Intel is also offering an unlocked Core i3 model, the $168 7350K, a dual-core CPU with four threads running at 4.2GHz. It’s something overclockers will appreciate, since they can tweak its speed settings to their heart’s content. And beyond that model, Intel claims all of its new seventh-gen chips will overclock better than previous models, thanks to several features that will stabilize the chips when pushing them beyond their listed speeds. The CPUs will also run on the company’s new 200-series chipset, which will support up to 24 PCI Express 3.0 chipset lanes and 10 USB 3.0 ports (along with a wealth of other technical upgrades).

Together with the new CPUs, Intel is also debuting an intriguing new technology called Optane Memory, which plugs into M.2 connections on motherboards to speed up systems. It’s not clear, exactly, how it all comes together, but Intel claims it’ll deliver SSD-like system speeds when used with a traditional hard drive. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s actually a better option than using an M.2 SSD with a hard drive, though — especially as SSD prices have fallen considerably over the years.

Just like with the earlier seventh-gen CPUs, you can expect Intel’s new desktop chips to handle 4K video pretty efficiently. That won’t mean as much for battery life savings, but it could make them much more useful for playing 4K on home theater PCs.

Basically, there’s a lot to look forward to if you’re buying a new desktop this year. But the new chips are more compelling if you’re upgrading from a system that’s a few years old, rather than something from last year. That’s a tad disappointing, but at the very least it’ll lead to some good deals on last year’s high-end CPUs.

Facebook censored a cartoon breast cancer awareness campaign

Facebook still has a thing or two to learn about what’s considered acceptable in your timeline. The social network is catching flak after it briefly took down an ad for Cancerfonden’s breast cancer awareness campaign that included cartoon representations of breasts — and very abstract ones at that (they were just pink circles).

The company has since restored the post and apologized, but only after Cancerfonden unsuccessfully tried using a ‘safe’ blurry image and posted an open letter that blasted Facebook’s stance. You’d need square breasts to make Facebook happy, the organization argued.

In apologizing for the move, Facebook said that it examines “millions” of ad images each week and sometimes bans them by mistake. There’s no denying that the internet giant has a lot on its plate, and that it would be difficult to completely avoid slip-ups.

However, this is just the latest in a string of incidents where Facebook has been overly aggressive with takedowns, only to backtrack after a public uproar. And this time, it can’t pin the removal on ambiguities in its existing policy — it acknowledged that the original image was fine in its mea culpa.

Clearly, the company has yet to reach that point where it can reliably tell the difference between potentially offensive content and something that’s merely testing boundaries.

Apple Confirms New MacBook Pro Launch Details

It’s time for the venerated MacBook Pro line-up to get some fresh blood, and this evening’s simple “Hello again” from Apple means we won’t have to wait long.

Apple has sent out the friendly invites asking the media to join Tim Cook and his team on Thursday October 27th at the Apple Campus in Cupertino. It is expected that a new line-up of MacBook Pro machines will be announced, and there is a strong chance that the MacBook and MacBook Air line-ups will also be refreshed.

Recent Mac and MacBook launches have seen a relatively long lead time between the official announcement and pre-orders being taken in various territories, although I would expect customers in the US and the main EU territories to receive the first units in time for Christmas 2016.

The full MacBook range has not received a huge amount of love from Apple in the last few years. Apart from the launch of the ultrathin MacBook last year, the MacBook Pro range’s last update was a token specs bump during 2016. In contrast to the iPhone and iPad lines Apple continues to sell a MacBook Pro model that was launched over four years ago in 2012.

Cook is expected to reveal a MacBook Pro which continues the ethos of dropping ports and old solutions that saw the headphone jack removed from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Apple’s push for minimalism and advancing new connectivity options will be achieved by dropping both the older USB ports and the Magsafe power cord from the new MacBooks. The hardware will rely on USB-C and Thunderbolt connections for power and peripherals, just as Apple achieved with last year’s new MacBook. The major addition to the design could be a programmable touch-sensitive OLED display strip above the keyboard offering a mix of information and redefinable function keys.

The new MacBook Pro design is expected to be available in both 13 inch and 15 inch form factors. The MacBook Air could see an updated 13 inch model as well, but there are strong indicators that the 11 inch model of the Air will be discontinued. That would not be a shock as the 12 inch MacBook is ruling this space and the smallest Air is lacking any unique features that could help it stand out.
