It’s Illegal in Michigan to Warm Up Your Car in Your Own Driveway

Here it is, a cold start into 2017 and people are getting tickets for warming up their cars…IN THEIR OWN DRIVEWAYS.

Is this a legitimate statewide-Michigan law? Or is it only enforced in certain state towns & cities?
According to the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code (R28-1458 & 257.676), you are in violation by “leaving a vehicle unattended on any street or any other place without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition and removing the ignition key.”

In other words, if you start your car with a key and leave it running, you’re breakin’ the law and could receive a civil infraction ticket if spotted by a keen-eyed officer….if you start your car with a remote-start, then you are NOT in violation.

The majority of us know it’s a bad idea to leave your car running while pumpin’ gas…and it’s understandably not a good idea to leave your car running in an establishment parking lot while you run inside for a few minutes…but evidently it’s not wise to warm up your car in your own driveway (unless it’s by remote). This law does protect you in public…but unless you live in a high-crime area, does it protect you in your own driveway?

Is it one of those old laws that have become obsolete over the years or something that should remain in effect? It’s not just a law in Michigan but other states as well. So either buck up and take the freezing cold while you drive down the road or get yourself a remote-starter. Source: 99wfmk.com

Know Your Connectivity Options at Buying a New Car

When shopping for a new car, most buyers typically focus on horsepower, fuel economy, interior comfort, and other obviously important features. But many vehicles have reached a certain level of parity among these categories, leaving in-dash technology and connectivity as key differentiators. That’s why it’s important to know your connectivity choices.

connectivity-options-at-buying-a-new-car

Apple CarPlay and Android Audio
Most car manufacturers are still zealously developing their own individual infotainment platforms and connectivity systems, but Apple and Google have rolled out much more universal options that are worth considering. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto don’t completely replace infotainment systems, but they offer unified, consistent app ecosystems and feature sets regardless of the make or model of car you’re driving.

Both CarPlay and Android Auto rely on your smartphone (iPhone or Android phone, respectively) to provide connected features. These systems usually work through an in-dash touch screen and include navigation, phone calls, and messaging. (Displays aren’t always necessary, though; Apple’s Siri Eyes Free lets you use many CarPlay features through voice commands without a touch screen on your dash.) They also incorporate some form of broad voice control system, either through Apple’s Siri or Google Now.

Many new connected cars include support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and older cars can be upgraded to use them with aftermarket double-DIN entertainment consoles like the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. Regardless, you’ll be counting on your smartphone’s connectivity for all information services, so poor reception and slow network speeds will affect how well any of it works.

Bring Your Own Device (Without Carplay or Android Auto)
Apple and Google options aside, connecting your smartphone to your car is hardly new. Ford’s Sync system pioneered this approach, and many others have followed. Navigation, location searches, messaging, and entertainment apps available through a car’s infotainment system in these situations all rely on your smartphone’s data connection (and 4G LTE will be your best bet for quick response and smooth streaming).

Keep in mind, the service is only as good as your cellular signal. And if you forget your phone at home or run out of battery, you also run out of luck.

Embedded Connectivity
Embedded connectivity lets you enjoy connected features and apps without relying on your smartphone. General Motors’ OnStar system introduced the concept almost two decades ago, using an onboard cellular radio to deliver telematics services such as automatic crash notification, and conveniences like remote door unlocking. OnStar has since started to offer 4G LTE data as an additional service over its telematics, projecting a Wi-Fi network around your vehicle so tablets and smartphones can get online through the car’s systems instead of the other way around.

Outside of OnStar, many automakers now offer cellular data service as options in their new vehicles. These faster connections let navigation systems download detailed information, including (for certain Audi and BMW models) Google Earth and Google Street View maps, or put other information at your fingertips. The advantage here is that you’re always connected instantly, whether your smartphone is available or not. But this kind of connectivity costs vehicle owners in the form of a subscription or a separate data plan. If you don’t keep paying, you don’t get the connected services. The Tesla Model S, on the other hand, comes with four years of free built-in 3G connectivity.

Hybid Connectivity
A hybrid system can offer the best of both of both worlds. You get the robust, always-on connectivity of an embedded radio for critical functions like automatic crash notification, while relying on a connected smartphone for other data, like infotainment. But you’ll still experience the downside of a separate data or subscription charge for certain services.

You can find examples of hybrid connectivity in the Uconnect system that’s available in Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. An embedded cellular radio is used for telematics features, Yelp local search, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, as part of the subscription-based Advantage package. Your smartphone, meanwhile, provides streaming music via apps like Aha Radio and Pandora.

Don’t Forget About Infotainment

It’s important to familiarize yourself with the type of connectivity a car has before you buy, but it’s just as important to consider the infotainment system. After all, that’s probably the main reason you want connectivity in the first place. Pay close attention to the apps and features offered with each system, and look for the one that most closely suits your needs. A good infotainment system and the right type of connectivity can mean the difference between a car you keep for the next 10 years, or one that you’re itching to trade in as soon as possible.

We’re projecting (literally) the election results on the Empire State Building. Watch as we light up the New York City skyline with the race to 270, winners of key states and the next US president-elect. #MyVote

Donald Trump made trade a key message in his campaign. He promised to bring back the manufacturing jobs that he said were lost to trade deals.

Large shares of voters in key rust belt states key to Hillary Clinton’s electoral map agreed with Trump’s view that trade agreements have hurt American workers. And they overwhelmingly supported the billionaire businessman at the ballot box.

TRUMP VS. CLINTON Presidental VOTE at POLLS Online

The Republican nominee was awarded its 10 electoral votes. The result was not as a surprise, as the last Democratic victory in the Show Me State came in 1996.

Clinton: Conn., Del., DC, Ill., Md., Mass., NJ, NM, NY, RI, Va., Vt.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump battled fiercely in a handful of exceptionally tight battleground states across the country Tuesday night, as an ugly and unpredictable presidential election lurched to an uncertain finish.

The contest in Florida, the night’s biggest swing state prize, was especially close. In North Carolina and Virginia, Clinton’s campaign was banking on a surge in major urban areas where the vote count was still trickling in.

How to Hack Wi-Fi Passwords

Chances are you have a Wi-Fi network at home, or live close to one (or more) that tantalizingly pop up in a list whenever you boot up the laptop. The problem is, if there’s a lock next to the name, that indicates security for the Wi-Fi network is turned on. Without the password or passphrase, you’re not going to get access to that network, or that sweet, sweet Internet that goes with it.

how-to-hack-wifi-password

Perhaps you forgot the password on your own network, or don’t have neighbors willing to share the Wi-Fi goodness. You could just go to a café and buy a latte and use the “free” Wi-Fi there. Download an app for your phone like WiFi-Map, and you’ll have a list of over 2 million hotspots with free Wi-Fi for the taking (including some passwords for locked Wi-Fi connections, if they’re shared by any of the app’s 7 million users).

But there are other ways to get back on the wireless, though some of them require such extreme patience and waiting, that café idea is going to look pretty good.

hack-wifi-password-reset-button

Reset the Router

Before you do this, just try to log into the router first. From there, you can easily reset your wireless password if you’ve forgotten it.

The problem is when you don’t know the password for the router, either. (They’re not the same thing, unless you set it up that way). Resetting the router is about as brute force a method as you get, and it only works if you have physical access to the router.

Almost every router in existence has a recessed reset button it. Push it with a pen or unfolded paperclip, hold it for about 10 seconds, and the router will change to the factory settings.

If you’ve got a router that came from your Internet service provider, check the stickers before a reset—they might have printed the router and Wi-Fi passwords (sometimes called the key) right on the hardware.

Once it’s reset, you need another password (plus a username) to access the router itself. Generally you can do this in a Web browser of any PC attached to the router via Ethernet—you’ll need that since the reset probably killed any potential Wi-Fi connection you had going in.

The URL to type is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, or some variation. Once you’re asked for a username/password, what do you do? Check your manual. Which you probably lost or threw away. So instead, go to RouterPasswords.com. The site exists for one reason: to tell people the default username/password on just about every router ever created.

hack-wifi-password-routerpasswords-com

You’ll need the router’s model number, but that’s easy enough to find on the back or bottom. You’ll quickly see a pattern among router makers of having the username of admin and a password of password. Since most people are lazy and don’t change an assigned password, you could try it before hitting the reset button. (But c’mon, you’re better than that—change the password once you’re in the router’s menus in your Web browser.)

Once you’ve accessed the router interface, go to the Wi-Fi settings, turn on the wireless networks, and assign them strong but easy-to-recall passwords. After all, you don’t want to share with neighbors without your permission.

Crack the Code

You didn’t come here because the headline said “reset the router,” though. You want to know how to crack the password on a Wi-Fi network.

Searching on “wi-fi password hack,” or other variations, nets you a lot of links—mostly for software on sites where the adware and bots and scams are pouring like snake oil. Download them at your own risk, for Windows PCs especially. Better to have a PC that you can afford to get effed up a bit if you go that route. I had multiple attempts with tools I found just get outright deleted by my antivirus before I could even try to run the EXE installation file.

Or, create a system just for this kind of thing, maybe dual-boot into a separate operating system that can do what’s called “penetration testing”—a form of offensive approach security, where you examine a network for any and all possible paths of breach. Kali Linux is a Linux distribution built for just that purpose. You can run Kali Linux off a CD or USB key without even installing it to the hard drive. Another option is BackTrack Linux—they’re actually both from the same developers, but Kali is the “polished” version. Both are free and come with all the tools you’d need to crack a network.

If you don’t want to install a whole OS, then you could try the two tried-and-true tools of Wi-Fi hackers.

Aircrack has been around for years, going back to when Wi-Fi security was only based on WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). WEP was weak even back in the day, and was supplanted in 2004 by WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). The latest Aircrack-ng 1.2—labeled as a “set of tools for auditing wireless networks,” so it should be part of any network admin’s toolkit—will take on cracking WEP and WPA-PSK keys.

Aircrack-ng comes with full documentation, but it’s not going to be that simple. To crack a network you also need to have the right kind of Wi-Fi adapter in your computer, one that supports packet injection. You need to be comfortable with the command line (running things using CMD) and have a lot of patience. Your Wi-Fi adapter and Aircrack have to gather a lot of data to get anywhere close to decrypting the passkey on the network you’re targeting. It could take a while.

If you prefer a graphical user interface (GUI), there is KisMAC-ng, or there was. The website was not working as of the writing of this article. While KisMAC can crack some keys with the right adapter installed, it’s mainly known as a “sniffer” for seeking out Wi-Fi networks. It’s the kind of thing we don’t need much of these days, since our phones and tablets do a pretty good job of showing us every since Wi-Fi signal in the air around us. Also on the Mac: Wi-Fi Crack. To use them or Aircrack-ng on the Mac, you need to install them using MacPorts, a tool for installing command-line products on the Mac.

wi-fi-crack

Cracking stronger WPA/WPA2 passwords and passphrases is the real trick these days. Reaver is the one tool that looks to be up to the task (and it’s part of the BackTrack Linux distro). You’ll need that command-line comfort again to work with it, or you’ll have to spend $65 for Reaver Pro, a hardware device that works with Windows and Mac. After two to 10 hours of trying brute force attacks, Reaver should be able to reveal a password… but it’s only going to work if the router you’re going after has both a strong signal and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) turned on. WPS is the feature where you can push a button on router, another button on a Wi-Fi device, and they find each other and link auto-magically, with a fully encrypted connection. It’s also the “hole” through which Reaver crawls. It can generally break the code in about 24 hours.

Even if you turn off WPS, sometimes it’s not completely off, but that’s your only recourse if you’re worried about hacks on your own router. Or, get a router that doesn’t support WPS.

How to Repair and Fix a Corrupt SD Card

How to Preserve your important and precious data from being corrupted and recover from accidental deletions

repair-and-fix-corrupt-sd-card

SD cards are great as they are small in size, lightweight and versatile (you can store any type of data on them). But what happens when a SD card on which you stored your important files, becomes inaccessible or corrupt and what about a SD card whose entire data got wiped out for no apparent reason.

We all face such kind of situation when our smartphone/PC/laptop throws up a message that it can’t access the SD card. Such situations are scary as we don’t have any access to the important files stored on the SD card. At least for those who store important files/videos/images in their memory card).

However, almost every problem has a solution. There are solutions to each of the specific data loss case. Most common of them are provided below.

I just can’t access my SD card

This is one the most common issue that readers complain about. Maybe this is a problem with other hardware that is your computer’s USB port or the card reader you’re using. Try connecting your card reader on a different port of the same computer or do it with a different computer. Also, you can try using a different card reader.

The Computer Shows my card name but not the content

If in case the content of the card is not being shown, you can try this:

1. Open the search bar and type “cmd”.
2. Click on “Command Prompt” or “cmd.exe
3. Type in “chkdsk /X /f sd card letter:” or “chkdsk sd card letter: /f “, for example,”chkdsk /X /f G:” or “chkdsk H: /f”.

Windows will check and fix the file system of the SD card. It will take a few minutes. If you see a message saying “Windows has made corrections to the file system” in the command window, then you’re done. Otherwise, you will have to use some third-party data recovery software.

Formatting the SD card

If the data contained on your card is not very useful or important, you can format the card to wipe all the bloating stuff.

To format your card, follow these steps:

1. Locate your SD card on your computer.( Usually its the last drive letter in “My Computer”)
2. Right click on its drive letter.
3. Select Format.
4. Select “Start”.
5. If you encounter any problem, retry with “Quick Format” box unchecked.

Using a data recovery software

The best way to get back all your important data will be to use a decent data recovery software. There are numerous software available. Some of them, which are considered to be “best-in-class” are listed.
1. Recuva (Experts recommend it as it is economic and does the job well)
2. Prosoft’s Data Rescue (Voted as best commercial data recovery software in 2016)
3. MiniTool Partition Recovery

These methods will help you get back your invaluable data back. Be sure to copy your data to a new SD card as soon as you recover your data as the problem you began with may trouble you again.
