iPhone- Setting Up Your Voice Mail on iPhone

Have you just bought a new iPhone and are having a hard time getting the voice mail set up? You may have spent hours on the phone with customer service and gotten nowhere. Here, you will find the help you need to get your voice mail set up easily.

The first thing is not to put the SIM card from your old phone into your iPhone. Everything else will work but you voice mail and visual mail will likely not work. If you go to an AT&T store, you can get a new SIM put in your phone and help with getting everything from your old SIM card transferred to it.

Now you are ready for the next step. Call customer service at AT&T (the exclusive iPhone service provider in the US) and tell the representative that you need to setup voice mail. Be sure to tell him or her to check to make sure the forwarding feature to forward calls to your voice mail is turned on. This is something that is often overlooked by customer service representatives. Once this is done, you are ready to actually setup voice mail.

Before you begin, it is a good idea to know what password you want to use. Might write down what you want to record as your outgoing message, too. Doing this will save time and make the process to setup voice mail go smoother.

Your password should be between 6 and 15 characters. Make sure it is something you can remember but others will find impossible to guess. Now you tap the voice mail icon on your iPhone. You will be asked to create a password at this point. Enter the password you have created and then you will be asked to record a greeting. You will have the option of using a default iPhone voice mail greeting that will include your phone number or you can record your own. You can change your greeting at any time by tapping voice mail, greeting, custom and then record. Do not forget to save your greeting once you are satisfied with it.

Students at Penn state who subscribe to Penn iPhone can log in to My iPhone and setup voice mail for their iPhones. PennKey authentication will be required. Once on the home page, look for Features and Voice Mail and go to that page. Here, you will put in the password you have created. You can change this password at any time by logging in on My iPhone or through the voice mail icon on your phone. After you have entered your password, re-enter it is the field, Confirm Password. After up press the submit button, your account will be updated to include it.

To record your greeting, press the ‘messages’ button, it will be to the right of the keypad. Press ‘0’ to bring up the mailbox options. From there, you will be prompted to choose the type of greeting you want, such as busy, unavailable and name. Then you will get a prompt from the system to record your greeting. When you are finished, choose accept, listen and, if you desire, re-record. When you are satisfied with your greeting, press * or # to go back to the menu or exit.

Looking at the i9000 Galaxy S from Samsung

The Galaxy S is the latest phone from Samsung. Boasting an impressive feature list and incorporating perhaps the best screen currently available, this well could be the handset to own in 2010. The third of Samsungs offering that run on the Google Android OS, the “TouchWiz” user interface on the Galaxy S makes the phone easy and fun to use. As is true of most smartphones currently available, the home screens rely heavily upon the use of widgets. Perhaps the most appealing of these on this new model is the friends and updates widget, which keeps the user up to date with the status updates of friends on various social networking sites. Looking rather similar to the iPhone, the Galaxy also feature four static buttons at the bottom of each screen. These are used for what really are the most basic, everyday functions available, Phone, Contacts, Messaging and Applications. A neat touch on the phone is the addition of active, animated wallpapers, meaning the screen has a real wow factor even when its not in use. The “Smart unlock” feature has also been included, as it was on previous TouchWiz interfaces. Simply put, this allows the user to draw a letter on the screen, and that letter can be assigned to a function so it opens automatically. Its little touches like this that make the Galaxy S a really attractive handset. One of the major draws of the Samsung Galaxy S is its very impressive screen. Measuring 4 inches, the screen features Super AMOLED technology. This means that everything is incorporated into a single sheet of glass, rather than between the two sheets as is found on LCD. This results in a thinner display with wider viewing angles and much deeper natural black colours. Naturally the screen is also a capacitive touchscreen, meaning excellent responsiveness to the users touch. This gorgeous screen is housed within the 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9mm body of the Galaxy S. The weight is also impressive at just 118 grammes. The impressive multi media facilities stretch to a 5 million pixel camera featuring geo tagging and autofocus. However perhaps the most impressive aspect of the camera is that it is capable of shooting video footage at 30 frames per second in a resolution of 720p, or in other terms High Definition. If your planning to uses the phone as an MP3 player, then this audio format is supported along with a host of others including AAC and WMA. The Samsung Galaxy S is a hugely impressive handset thanks to the size and Super AMOLED technology of the screen, alongside the host of nice features that the phone offers. For the people who are looking for a good alternative to the HTC’s and the iPhone’s, the Galaxy S is certainly worth a look. The Samsung Galaxy S and the Blackberry 9105 Pearl 3G are coming soon.

iPhone Development – RSS, XML, ASP.NET and Generic Handlers

As soon as your boss gets an iPhone, he’s going to be asking you how to get to your corporate data from the road. Good side is that you’ll need to get both a Mac and an iPhone but then you need to make it all happen. We focused on delivering a solution quickly that was very simple, adjustable and quick to market.

Specifically for us, we have corporate statistics that our executives wanted to be able to view easily from the road without having to boot up a laptop, find wireless, login to our web app, navigate to the statistics page… you know the drill. Instead, they should be able to pull their iPhone out and push a ‘stats’ button. Boom! There are the stats.

Many people are searching for the golden sample iphone application that they can model and forget that there is back-end infrastructure required to feed that data to the requesting iPhone. To get that done, you’re probably already thinking a nice web service feeding back XML. SOAP comes to mind but the current release of the iPhone SDK is light in support. This is where most people will direct you to using REST. REST is cool in that it is an URL based requestor but it takes a lot of work to set it up.

Remember that part of our goal is ‘quick to market’ so why not consider the generic HTTP handler that is in Visual Studio.

Here’s what you do:

1. follow the sample for building an RSS reader and get it wired into your iphone. Follow it word for word and it will work great. Here is the link: [Click Here]
2. now in Visual Studio add a public generic handler. This will be a .ASHX file
3. in your SQL database, build a table that houses a user name to iphone ID relationship
4. edit the generic handler to take in two parameters — one for the requested operation (in our case: stats) and one for the iphone ID.
5. if they are validated respond to them with the stats in XML using context.response
6. test this in your browser passing the correct parameters so you know it’s
working before you start trying to hit it from the iphone.
7. now adjust your iphone app to use your new URL with parameters.

Once you get the basics working:

1. create a corporate db table that houses iphone ID to user Id relationships and check it as the first operation on the handler. This makes the handler extremely secure because you can’t get past the front door without a valid iphone Id. BTW, we used UDID to get the addresses to be used. You have to do this for the ad-hoc provisioning anyway so you’re doubly covered.
2. create a logging function that writes date, time, user, iphone and function to a table
3. enhance the iphone app to allow drill down capabilities (just another operation)

A couple of notes:

this is scaleable by way of the parameters passed.
you can adjust the output at the asp.net level instead of the iphone.
this is very secure in that only the registered iphones will get in.

Good Luck
