Best Cars with Android Auto Smartphone Integration for Wise Shoppers

2017 Audi A4. As a member of the Volkswagen Group, Audi is likewise looking to offer more cars with Android Auto, and the all-new 2017 Audi A4 is leading the way. In fact, it takes a leading-edge approach to technology in a lot of different areas. Audi smartphone integration, also supporting Apple CarPlay, is standard with the car’s new infotainment system, and that setup serves up 4G LTE connectivity, too, along with 7- and 8.3-inch MMI screens and an optional “all-in-touch” haptic control interface. There’s also more audio bang for your buck, courtesy of a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers, 755 watts of power and a 16-channel Class D amp. But the coolest tech cues are available with the Audi “virtual cockpit” instrument display, complete with a 12.3-inch screen that’s powered by NVIDIA quad-core processing and provides both Google Map data and typical vehicle-system info.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu. The Bowtie brand continues to bring new technologies to the mainstream with the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, which is just one of the current Chevy cars with Android Auto among its multimedia resources. And though it’s not standard on the entry model, it is part of the package with the Malibu LS that starts at a mere $23,120. At that price point, the car’s MyLink infotainment system features not just the Android tech, but also Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth for both hands-free calling and audio streaming; OnStar’s mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and 4G LTE connectivity is standard on all Malibus, while the more premium editions offer an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, wireless phone chargers and rear-seat USB ports. Customers also should remember that the 2016 Malibu represents an all-new generation for the popular midsize sedan, showcasing larger dimensions, lower curb weights and a standard turbocharged engine.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Because the technology is still relatively new—and because some brands don’t want third parties to access their data—there are surprisingly few luxury cars with Android Auto. However, that is beginning to change, thanks to premium sedans like the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Touting top technologies across the board, the new E-Class is especially impressive in the cabin, where an available dual-screen display, comprising two adjacent 12.3-inch screens that share the same glass cover, delivers virtual instrumentation and infotainment resources while also serving as a decidedly futuristic design element—which can be further fine-tuned with three driver-selectable themes. Naturally, those just-mentioned infotainment features include smartphone integration and Mercedes’ COMAND Online services, as well as some serious sound technologies: The “Frontbass” system uses spaces in the body structure of the car to act as resonance chambers, boosting the bass considerably, and the optional Burmeister setup brings 3D surround sound backed by four roof speakers.

2017 Mitsubishi Mirage
. Pricing has yet to be set for the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage, but it will certainly be among the least expensive cars with Android Auto when it goes on sale this spring. After all, the current Mirage opens at just $12,995, although that is for the 2015 model—Mitsubishi skipped the 2016 model year for the car, perhaps spending the time in developing the many upgrades offered for the 2017 version. But drivers will reap the rewards whatever the reason, since the Mirage not only supplies smartphone integration, but also an available Rockford-Fosgate audio system with EcoPunch technology for high-efficiency hi-fi sound. Mitsubishi designers also freshened the car’s appearance, restyling the hood, grille, bumpers, wheels, lights and more, with engineers pitching in with suspension and braking tuneups for a more refined driving experience. There’s even a small uptick in output, to 78 horsepower (with an unchanged 74 lb.-ft. of torque).

2016 Volkswagen Beetle. VW is another brand that’s going all-in with smartphone integration, betting on its popularity by supplying it throughout the lineup, even on the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle. But be aware that VW entries like the Bug go beyond most cars with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to also deliver MirrorLink compatibility, from a leading third-party connectivity company that’s particularly prominent on the global scene. The Beetle additionally boasts a relatively affordable MSRP: In its 1.8T SE trim, the Beetle bundles smartphone integration, a 6.33-inch touchscreen, a rear-vision camera, and VW’s Car-Net App-Connect service for $21,350. A final Bug bonus is found in the convertible models, as those cars combine the same technologies with the inimitable excitement of an open-air driving experience—and an available sound system that bolsters 400 watts of power with all of the audio expertise you’d expect from the great ears behind Fender guitars.

2016-volkswagen-beetle-android-auto-smartphone-integration

Cars with Android Auto may not get the same kind of buzz as those with Apple CarPlay, yet they both provide much the same sort of advanced smartphone integration that, essentially, puts owners’ homescreens front and center on the vehicles’ infotainment displays. It’s a simple, affordable way to go online while on the road, allowing owners to access the wide range of apps and service they’re used to using in their daily lives. The range of vehicles offering the service is narrower, however, although the pioneers presented here will no doubt be joined by more entries as time goes on.

Original Samsung Galaxy A5 is getting Android 7.0 Nougat update in January

Samsung is obviously working on getting final, stable Android 7.0 Nougat updates for its flagship devices out as soon as possible – in fact there have already been several beta releases for the Galaxy S7. But what about the mid-rangers? At the beginning of the month we heard that the entire Galaxy A (2016) line would in fact be graced with the ability to taste the sweet treat, even if a timeline for the rollout wasn’t shared.

galaxy-a5-nougat-update-android-7-0

That’s perhaps to be expected, but what about a member of the original A series? Namely, the Galaxy A5 from 2014. You probably wouldn’t hold your breath expecting this model to receive a Nougat update, would you?

Well, too bad, because that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Optus, an Australian carrier, has confirmed that the update to Nougat for the A5 units it’s sold is currently in testing, and if everything goes well it’s expected to roll out in late January.

The Galaxy A5 launched running Android 4.4 KitKat, and it’s already been bumped up to Lollipop and then Marshmallow. So if this actually happens, the original A5 will be one of the longest-supported Samsung smartphones ever. Hopefully the Nougat update won’t be limited to Australia and will make its way across the globe, if not in January, then in February and the months coming after that.

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy A5 are going to start the new year off right with Optus advising in their software update blog that they’re testing Nougat for the handset.

There’s bare bones information about the update, which will take the phone from Android 6.0.1 to Android 7.0, but Optus apparently expects to start rolling the update out at the end of January next year. That’s providing that all goes according to plan.

There’s no information on a Nougat update for other A-series handsets in the Optus range such as the Galaxy A3, but there should be something there further down the track.

It’s not there yet, but we’ll be keeping an eye on progress throughout January.

How to Connect an Android Smartphone to Your TV

It’s not so difficult to screen photos, videos, or cast your phone or tablet display to your television. If you haven’t tried it yet, we’ve got an easy guide here on how to connect your smartphone or tablet with a TV. Read on for the details.

how-to-connect-an-android-smartphone-to-your-tv

Connect an Android smartphone with a TV: getting started

It’s pretty easy to connect your smartphone to a Smart TV directly via Wi-Fi. This allows you to stream different media from Android devices. Among the major Smart TV manufacturers are Samsung, Sony, Philips, LG and Panasonic. Their Smart TVs provide the possibility to connect smartphones and tablets via Wi-Fi onto the same network for streaming. Some manufacturers also allow a direct wireless connection to the Smart TV. For example, Sony and Samsung’s newer TVs provide “screen mirroring”, allowing you to display whatever’s on your smartphone screen.

It’s pretty straightforward to transfer photos, videos and stream Youtube to a Smart TV with Android smartphones and tablets. While the Youtube app for Android can be easily connected to a TV via the streaming icon, displaying photos and videos might be a little more effort. Where the old Gallery app requires you to send each image individually via the TV share button, this function is no longer available in the Google Photos app.

Connect an Android smartphone with a TV: the right app can help

Free streaming apps like ‘iMediaShare – Photos & Music’ come in handy. They let you transfer photos, videos and music from your smartphone or tablet to Smart TV or other DLNA-enabled devices, such as sound systems and set-top boxes. With iMediaShare, you can select by file type and also play videos in automatic succession on your TV. Another option is to install Android apps on the TV itself.

Download Here iMediaShare on GooglePay Store

Casting over a wireless network is usually associated with delayed playback on Smart TVs. This doesn’t matter so much with casting images, but this can make transmitting video a little annoying.

Connect an Android smartphone with a TV: television as smartphone display

Bear in mind that you mightn’t always be able to stream content from your phone to the TV via wireless connectivity. Anyone who wants to avoid problems like this should run a direct connection to the Smart TV, or regular TV. You can do this with a smartphone or tablet via HDMI input.

While a compact HDMI output for tablets is hard to find, whether in the form of mini-HDMI or micro HDMI, you won’t need this for your smartphone. Most mobile phones simply don’t have enough space for chunky adapters. This problem can be solved with the USB port expander Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL). MHL 3.0 even allows HDMI transmission of 4K content from mobile devices to Ultra-HD televisions.

Connect an Android smartphone with a TV: SlimPort as MHL alternative

Google, along with other phone manufacturers, has not backed MHL, but rather SlimPort. With SlimPort, USB is used in combination with a separate adapter cable to connect to a TV or projector via HDMI. Unfortunately, that was only until the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Neither still supports HDMI output, SlimPort or MHL. A list of SlimPort-compatible devices includes smartphones like the BlackBerry Priv, the LG G4 and LG V10 and various tablets in Amazon’s Kindle series, as well as the Google Nexus 7.

Connect an Android smartphone with a TV: what you can also try

If neither wireless streaming or MHL/SlimPort are a solution to connect your Android smartphone to the TV, then perhaps you can simply plug it into the USB port of the TV. In this way, stored photos and videos can be also displayed on the TV from the internal memory or microSD card. Otherwise the TV could be given a boost with the help of set-top boxes, or media sticks that act as a bridge between Smart TV and smartphone.

Then there’s the Google Chromecast. This device allows you to cast content from your Android smartphone or tablet right to the TV. All you need to run it with is the Chromecast app, which you’ll find for free in the Play Store, and plug the Chromecast into the HDMI port of your TV.

There are many apps for The Chromecast, such as video streaming behemoth Netflix. And whosoever likes to show off photos or videos to friends can stream content via the ‘AllCast’ app. The second generation of Chromecast can be found in the Google Play Store for around $39 Euro.

Android Nougat 7.1 beta is now out for select devices

Google has delivered on its promise and released the developer preview of Android Nougat 7.1 for beta testers before October ended.

android-nougat-7-1

You can only access it if you have a Nexus 5X, a Nexus 6P or a Pixel C, though — Google won’t be releasing it for other devices until November, and its final public release won’t be available until December. If you do have any of the three devices, you can expect to get an OTA update if you’re enrolled to Android’s beta program.

While you can download the preview even if you don’t actually make apps, its features definitely benefit developers the most. Besides Daydream VR support, it comes with the capability to make app shortcuts and circular launcher icons to match the look of Google’s new Pixel phones.

That said, it does have something for ordinary users: a restart button in the power menu. It also supports image keyboards, which allow you to insert stickers and GIFs in apps. If you’d like to test 7.1 out without enrolling to Google’s beta program, you can also do a manual update by flashing a system image.

How to run Android in a PC ( BlueStacks )

Android is the most widely used mobile OS while Windows is number one in PC operating system usage. How cool would it be if we can run both of them on a single device. I bet you wanted to do this at sometime when using your PC. In this article we provide necessary information to run all Android apps in Windows PC.

bluestacks-run-android-in-a-pc

BlueStacks

Possibly BlueStacks is currently the best way to run Android apps on Windows. It doesn’t replace your entire operating system. Instead, it runs Android apps within a window on your Windows desktop. This allows you to use Android apps just like any other program. BlueStacks also includes support for easy installation of apps from Google Play, so the process is as seamless as possible. Even better, BlueStacks runs Android apps and games with surprisingly good performance.

The UI is fairly simple and installing and running is a child’s play. This is only a solution for running Android apps on Windows. Unlike many of the other options here, this is a fairly stable and polished experience.

Similar applications, including YouWave and Windroy, lack the speed and easy app installation which BlueStacks offers.

Official Android Emulator

Google provides an official Android emulator as part of the Android SDK. You can use it to run the Android operating system in a window on your existing computer. This gives you complete access to the entire Android operating system. It’s intended for developers to test their Android apps.

Unfortunately, the official Android emulator is rather slow and isn’t a good option for everyday use. It’s useful if you want to test apps or play with the latest version of Android, but you wouldn’t want to actually use apps or play games in it.

To get started with the Android Emulator, download Google’s Android SDK, open the SDK Manager program, and select Tools > Manage AVDs. Click the New button and create a an Android Virtual Device (AVD) with your desired configuration, then select it and click the Start button to launch it.

Android-x86

Android-x86 is a community project to port Android to the x86 platform so it can run natively on Intel and AMD processors, allowing you to install Android on a laptop or tablet just as you’d install Windows or Linux. This project was originally noteworthy for providing a way to run Android on low-power netbooks, giving those old netbooks some additional life.

Only certain devices are officially supported at this time. The official page lists ASUS Eee PCs, the Viewsonic Viewpad 10, Del Inspiron Mini Duo, Samsung Q1U, Viliv S5, and Lenovo ThinkPad x61 Tablet as tested platforms. However, you should also be able to install it inside VirtualBox. This allows you to install Android inside a virtual machine.

run-android-in-virtualbox

Bear in mind that this project isn’t stable. You should exercise extreme caution when installing it on physical hardware.

Mini smallest Android phone

These days, people love having phones with large displays, even though Apple’s new iPhone SE shows that there’s still a market for smaller phones. Even this new smaller iPhone looks positively huge compared to a new Android phone called the Posh Mobile Micro X S240. Unbox Therapy over the weekend got a first look at this tiny new Android phone, which features a 2.4-inch display, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a dual-core processor, a two-megapixel rear-facing camera and Android 4.4 KitKat.

mini-smalles-android-phones

As you’d expect with a device with a 2.4-inch display, you can’t exactly load up your home screen with lots of app icons.

You can still arrange to have your basics, including photo gallery, music, web browser, etc. on the home display, however.

Typing on the tiny display seems like it’s a challenge, however, and with just 4GB of storage you won’t be able to install or update a large number of apps.

For the record, here’s how the phone looks compared to the massive Galaxy Note 5:

Yes, that is small.
